Budapest on a Budget: Your Complete Travel Guide

Budapest is one of Europe's most jaw-dropping capitals, and the best-kept secret is that you don't need to spend a fortune to experience it. Whether you're soaking in a centuries-old thermal bath or sipping craft beer along the Danube, this city rewards travellers who know where to look — and how to plan smart.

Overview

Straddling the Danube River, Budapest is actually two cities in one: hilly, historic Buda on the west bank and flat, buzzing Pest on the east. Together they form a UNESCO-listed metropolis of around two million people, with architecture that ranges from Roman ruins to Art Nouveau masterpieces. Hungary uses the Hungarian Forint (HUF), which works strongly in favour of visitors from the US, UK, and Western Europe. As of 2025, one US dollar stretches to roughly 370–380 HUF, making Budapest genuinely affordable without feeling cheap.

Why visit? The thermal baths alone are worth the flight. Add ruin bars, world-class river views, a thriving food scene, and some of the most beautiful parliamentary buildings in Europe, and you have a destination that punches well above its weight.

Essential Information

  • Currency: Hungarian Forint (HUF). ATMs are widely available; avoid airport exchange kiosks for better rates.
  • Language: Hungarian, but English is widely spoken in the tourist districts and by younger locals.
  • Visa requirements: Hungary is part of the Schengen Area. US, UK, Canadian, and Australian passport holders can visit for up to 90 days without a visa.
  • Best time to visit: Late April through June and September through October offer mild weather and fewer crowds. July and August are busy and warm, while December brings beautiful Christmas markets.
  • Safety: Budapest is generally very safe. Keep an eye on your belongings in crowded tourist areas and be aware of overpriced tourist traps near Váci Street.

Practical Tips

  • Get a Budapest Card: Available in 24-, 48-, and 72-hour versions (starting around $25 USD), it covers unlimited public transport and free entry to several museums.
  • Use the metro and trams: A single public transport ticket costs under $1 USD. The M1 metro line — one of the oldest in the world — runs straight through the city centre.
  • Eat in the Jewish Quarter: The VII district around Kazinczy Street is packed with affordable local restaurants, street food stalls, and the famous Great Market Hall, where you can grab a lángos (fried dough) for around $2–3.
  • Book thermal baths in advance: Széchenyi and Gellért baths are iconic, but they fill up fast. Entry runs $20–30 USD depending on the package. Go on a weekday morning to beat the crowds.
  • Skip the tourist taxis: Use the Bolt app (Eastern Europe's answer to Uber) for reliable, metered rides at a fraction of the hailed-cab price.
  • Cross the river often: Buda is quieter, cheaper for meals, and home to Castle Hill — one of the best free views in Europe.

Getting There

Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD) is the city's main hub, located about 16 miles southeast of the centre. From the US, expect connecting flights through major European hubs including London Heathrow, Amsterdam Schiphol, Frankfurt, and Vienna. Airlines such as British Airways, Lufthansa, KLM, and LOT Polish Airlines offer well-priced connections. Budget carriers including Wizz Air and Ryanair connect Budapest to dozens of European cities for as little as $20–40 USD one way if you book early.

From the airport, the cheapest way into the city is the 100E airport express bus, which runs directly to Deák Ferenc tér in the city centre for around $3 USD. Taxis and rideshares cost $15–25 USD and are a solid option if you're travelling with luggage late at night.

Accommodation Options

Budapest offers excellent value across all budget levels, and staying in the V, VI, or VII districts puts you within walking distance of most major sights.

  • Budget ($15–40/night): Hostels like Maverick City Lodge and Wombats Budapest are well-reviewed, centrally located, and social. Expect clean dorms, free Wi-Fi, and regular social events.
  • Mid-range ($60–130/night): Boutique hotels and Airbnb apartments in the Jewish Quarter or near the Parliament building offer fantastic value. Look for places with Danube views — they're more affordable here than in Paris or Prague.
  • Luxury ($150–300+/night): The Four Seasons Gresham Palace is a landmark in itself, with stunning Art Nouveau interiors overlooking the Chain Bridge. The Aria Hotel Budapest is another outstanding option for design lovers.
