Day Trips: Casablanca, Morocco

Casablanca doesn't always make the top of Morocco's travel bucket lists β€” but those who skip it are missing something genuinely special. Africa's fifth-largest city is a buzzing, cosmopolitan metropolis where Art Deco boulevards meet ancient medinas, and the scent of mint tea drifts past gleaming skyscrapers. Give it a day, and Casablanca will surprise you.

Overview

Casablanca β€” or "Casa" as locals affectionately call it β€” is Morocco's economic capital and largest city, home to around four million people. Unlike the imperial cities of Fes and Marrakech, it isn't frozen in time for tourists. It's a living, working city with genuine local energy, and that's exactly what makes a day trip here so rewarding.

  • Country: Morocco
  • Language: Arabic and French (English widely spoken in tourist areas)
  • Currency: Moroccan Dirham (MAD) β€” roughly $1 USD = 10 MAD
  • Time Zone: GMT+1
  • Best Time to Visit: March to May and September to November for mild, comfortable weather

The headline attraction is the Hassan II Mosque, one of the largest mosques in the world and the only one in Morocco open to non-Muslim visitors. Beyond that, the Art Deco architecture of the Maarif district, the lively fish market near the old medina, and the breezy Corniche waterfront all deserve a spot on your itinerary.

Essential Information

Casablanca is easy to navigate and genuinely welcoming to visitors. The city centre is compact enough that many highlights can be reached on foot or by a short taxi ride. Here's what you need to know before you go:

  • Visa: Citizens of the US, EU, UK, Canada, and Australia do not need a visa for stays under 90 days.
  • Safety: Casablanca is generally safe for tourists. Stick to well-lit areas at night and be aware of your belongings in crowded souks.
  • Dress code: Modest clothing is appreciated, especially near religious sites. Shoulders and knees covered is the respectful standard.
  • Tipping: 10–15% at restaurants is customary. Round up taxi fares as a courtesy.
  • Water: Drink bottled water. It's widely available and costs under $1 USD at most corner shops.

Practical Tips

A few insider tips can make the difference between a frustrating day and a brilliant one. First, book a guided tour of the Hassan II Mosque in advance β€” tickets are around $14 USD and tours run at set times. Showing up without a booking in peak season can mean a long wait or disappointment.

For lunch, skip the tourist-facing restaurants near the Corniche and head instead to the Quartier Habous, also called the New Medina. This quieter neighbourhood was built in the 1930s and blends French colonial planning with traditional Moroccan architecture. You'll find excellent pastilla and tagine here for as little as $6–10 USD per person.

  • Use Petit Taxis (small beige cabs) for getting around the city β€” they're metered, reliable, and rarely cost more than $3–5 USD per ride.
  • The Tramway (tram network) is clean, air-conditioned, and a great way to reach the Corniche from the city centre for around $0.60 USD.
  • Carry small bills in dirhams β€” many small vendors and market stalls don't carry change for large notes.
  • Visit the Central Market (MarchΓ© Central) in the morning when the seafood is freshest and the atmosphere is at its most lively.

Getting There

Casablanca is served by Mohammed V International Airport (CMN), Morocco's busiest airport and the main hub for Royal Air Maroc. Direct flights operate from major European cities including London, Paris, Madrid, and Amsterdam, with flight times typically ranging from 2.5 to 3.5 hours. From New York, Royal Air Maroc operates a direct service to CMN in approximately 7.5 hours.

Connecting flights are available through most major European hubs if you're travelling from further afield. Once at CMN, the Airport Express Train (ONCF) runs directly into Casa-Voyageurs station in the city centre in about 45 minutes and costs around $4.50 USD β€” easily the best way to arrive.

Accommodation Options

Whether you're making Casablanca a true day trip or extending your stay overnight, there's accommodation to suit every budget.

  • Budget ($40–70/night): Auberge de Jeunesse Casablanca and several guesthouses in the Maarif district offer clean, central rooms without breaking the bank.
  • Mid-Range ($90–180/night): Hotel Kenzi Basma and HΓ΄tel Idou Anfa offer great value, comfortable rooms, and excellent locations close to the Corniche.
  • Luxury ($250+/night): The Four Seasons Hotel Casablanca is the city's flagship luxury address, with stunning Atlantic Ocean views and impeccable service. Hyatt Regency Casablanca is another top-tier choice in the heart of the city.
