Best Things To Do: Madrid, Spain

Madrid is one of Europe's most electric capital cities — a place where world-class art sits around the corner from neighbourhood tapas bars, and the night never really ends. Whether you're a first-time visitor or a returning traveller, Spain's beating heart always has something new to offer.

Overview

Sitting at the geographic centre of Spain, Madrid is home to around 3.4 million people and enjoys more sunny days per year than almost any other European capital. The city operates on its own rhythm — lunch at 2pm, dinner at 10pm, and a nightlife scene that keeps going until sunrise. It blends imperial grandeur with gritty, creative energy, and it does so without ever feeling like it's trying too hard. Entry to several major museums is free on certain evenings, the metro is fast and affordable, and the food scene ranges from budget-friendly bocadillos to Michelin-starred restaurants. In short, Madrid rewards every type of traveller.

Top 10 Activities

  • Visit the Museo del Prado: One of the finest art museums in the world, the Prado houses masterpieces by Velázquez, Goya, and El Greco. General admission is around $17 USD, but entry is free Monday to Saturday from 6–8pm and all day Sunday.
  • Explore the Reina Sofía: Home to Picasso's iconic Guernica, this modern art museum in the Atocha neighbourhood is unmissable. Free entry on Monday evenings and Sunday afternoons.
  • Wander around Retiro Park: Hire a rowboat on the lake, stroll through the rose garden, or simply people-watch. This enormous green space is free to enter and beloved by locals at weekends.
  • Get lost in La Latina: This is Madrid's oldest neighbourhood, packed with medieval streets, independent bars, and some of the best tapas in the city. Sunday brunch at the El Rastro flea market followed by a vermouth crawl is a true local tradition.
  • Catch a Real Madrid match: Football in Madrid is a religion. A game at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium is a bucket-list experience. Tickets range from around $30 to $200+ USD depending on the fixture.
  • Visit the Royal Palace (Palacio Real): The largest royal palace in Western Europe by floor area, it's a stunning piece of Baroque architecture. Entry costs around $14 USD and the views from the adjacent gardens are spectacular.
  • Eat your way through Mercado de San Miguel: Located near Plaza Mayor, this covered iron market is filled with pintxos, cured meats, fresh oysters, and excellent Spanish wine. Budget around $15–25 USD for a satisfying tour of the stalls.
  • Explore the Malasaña neighbourhood: Madrid's bohemian heart, Malasaña is full of vintage shops, independent coffee spots, and late-night bars. It's the city's creative soul and best explored on foot in the early evening.
  • Take a day trip to Toledo: Just 30 minutes by high-speed train (around $15 USD each way), Toledo is a UNESCO World Heritage city perched on a rocky hilltop with a cathedral, a Moorish fortress, and winding medieval lanes.
  • Attend a flamenco show: While flamenco is technically more associated with Andalucía, Madrid has excellent tablaos. Corral de la Morería in the La Latina area is one of the most respected, with tickets from around $50 USD including a drink.

Practical Tips

  • Transport: The Madrid Metro is clean, reliable, and cheap — a single journey costs around $2 USD. A 10-trip card (Metrobús) is better value at around $12 USD. The city is also very walkable if you stay central.
  • Best time to visit: Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) offer the best weather and smaller crowds. July and August are hot, often exceeding 100°F (38°C).
  • Language: Spanish is essential. Most tourism staff speak English, but learning a few basic phrases goes a long way in local bars and markets.
  • Tipping: Not obligatory, but rounding up or leaving a euro or two at a café or bar is appreciated. In restaurants, 5–10% is generous.
  • Safety: Madrid is generally safe, but keep an eye on belongings in busy areas like Puerta del Sol and Gran Vía.
