Complete Travel Guide: Maldives, Maldives

Introduction

Picture yourself stepping off a seaplane onto a wooden jetty surrounded by nothing but turquoise water stretching endlessly in every direction. The Maldives is one of those destinations that genuinely lives up to the hype — and then some. Whether you're chasing a honeymoon dream, a bucket-list adventure, or simply the world's most photogenic sunrise, this island nation delivers every single time.

Overview

The Maldives is an archipelago of 26 atolls and more than 1,000 coral islands scattered across the Indian Ocean, southwest of Sri Lanka. It holds the title of the world's lowest-lying country, with most land sitting just one metre above sea level. Despite its small size, it punches well above its weight as a travel destination, drawing visitors from every corner of the globe with its powder-white beaches, world-class diving, and legendary overwater bungalows.

Why visit? The underwater world alone is reason enough. The Maldives is home to manta rays, whale sharks, vibrant coral gardens, and some of the clearest water on the planet — visibility can reach up to 30 metres. Above the surface, the pace is slow, the sunsets are electric, and the hospitality is genuinely warm.

Essential Information

  • Currency: Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR), though US dollars are widely accepted at resorts and tourist areas.
  • Language: Dhivehi is the official language, but English is spoken fluently across the tourism industry.
  • Visa: Most nationalities receive a free 30-day visa on arrival — no pre-application required.
  • Time Zone: UTC+5 (no daylight saving time).
  • Electricity: 230V, Type G plugs (the same as the UK). Bring an adapter if you're travelling from the US or Europe.
  • Alcohol: Alcohol is only legally available at resort islands and liveaboards — not on local islands.
  • Religion: Islam is the state religion. Dress modestly when visiting local islands and avoid public displays of affection outside resort areas.

Practical Tips

The Maldives can be expensive, but savvy travellers can stretch their budget further than they might expect. Staying on a local island such as Maafushi, Thulusdhoo, or Dhigurah gives you genuine Maldivian culture, guesthouses from as little as $50–$90 per night, and access to beautiful bikini beaches — designated swimming areas set aside for tourists on otherwise conservative islands.

Book speedboat transfers in advance when staying on local islands, as they're significantly cheaper than seaplanes — sometimes $20–$40 return versus $300–$600 for a seaplane flight. Eating at local cafés, called teashops, costs just $3–$8 for a full meal of rice, tuna curry, and freshly squeezed juice. The best travel months are November through April, when skies are clearest and seas are calm. The wet season (May to October) brings lower prices and a moodier, more dramatic atmosphere — still worth considering if budget is a priority.

Getting There

All international flights land at Velana International Airport (MLE) on Hulhulé Island, just a short ferry ride from the capital, Malé. Direct flights operate from major hubs including Dubai, Singapore, London, and Mumbai. Airlines such as Emirates, Singapore Airlines, Qatar Airways, and Flydubai offer regular connections, with flight times ranging from around five hours from Dubai to eleven hours from London.

From Malé, your onward journey depends on your resort or island. A 15-minute ferry connects Malé to Hulhumalé, the country's planned urban extension, which makes a convenient and affordable base. Seaplanes operated by Maldivian and Trans Maldivian Airways whisk guests to far-flung atolls, while speedboats and domestic flights connect travellers to the outer islands. Always confirm your transfer details with your accommodation well before arrival.

Accommodation Options

The Maldives has something for every budget — though even the budget tier here can feel luxurious compared to other destinations.

  • Budget ($50–$120/night): Local island guesthouses on Maafushi or Fulidhoo offer clean rooms, friendly hosts, and real Maldivian community life. Breakfast is often included, and snorkelling trips can be arranged cheaply through the guesthouse.
  • Mid-range ($150–$400/night): Boutique resorts and smaller privately owned islands such as Oblu Select Lobigili or Kuredu Island Resort strike a great balance between value and experience, often including meals, water sports, and even a house reef for snorkelling right off the beach.
  • Luxury ($500–$3,000+/night): The iconic overwater villas at resorts like Gili Lankanfushi, Soneva Jani, or the Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi represent the pinnacle of this destination. Expect private plunge pools, glass floors above the lagoon, butler service, and all-inclusive dining that borders on extraordinary.
