Welcome to Paradise — But Stay Safe While You're There

The Maldives is one of those destinations that genuinely lives up to the hype — turquoise lagoons, overwater bungalows, and some of the best snorkelling on the planet. But like any trip abroad, a little preparation goes a long way toward making sure your dream holiday stays that way. Here's everything you need to know to travel smart in the Maldives.

Overview

The Maldives is an archipelago of around 1,200 coral islands spread across the Indian Ocean, southwest of Sri Lanka. Only about 200 of those islands are inhabited, and the country is split into 26 atolls. The capital, Malé, is one of the most densely populated cities in the world despite being tiny in size. Tourism is the backbone of the economy, and the country welcomes millions of visitors each year drawn by its world-class diving, pristine beaches, and luxurious resorts.

The Maldives consistently ranks as one of the safest destinations in Asia for tourists. Violent crime against visitors is rare, and the local population is generally welcoming and hospitable. That said, there are cultural norms, environmental conditions, and practical realities that every traveller should understand before arriving.

Essential Information

  • Currency: The Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR) is the local currency, but US dollars are widely accepted at resorts and many guesthouses. Budget around $150–$300 per day on a mid-range island guesthouse, and significantly more at luxury resorts.
  • Religion and culture: The Maldives is a 100% Muslim nation. Public displays of affection should be kept minimal, especially on local islands. Bikinis are fine on resort islands but should not be worn in Malé or on inhabited local islands.
  • Alcohol: Alcohol is only permitted on resort islands and liveaboard vessels. Bringing alcohol into the country is illegal and can result in serious penalties.
  • Sun and ocean safety: The equatorial sun is intense year-round. Wear reef-safe sunscreen, stay hydrated, and never snorkel or dive alone. Currents can be strong and unpredictable, even in seemingly calm lagoons.
  • Health: No vaccinations are specifically required for the Maldives, but hepatitis A and typhoid are recommended. Tap water is not safe to drink — stick to bottled water, which costs around $1–$2 per bottle at local shops.
  • Emergency numbers: Police: 119, Ambulance: 102, Fire: 118.

Practical Tips

  • Keep your passport and travel documents in your room safe at all times. Petty theft, while uncommon, does occur in busier areas like Malé's main ferry terminal.
  • Travel insurance is essential — and make sure it covers water sports and diving if you plan to do either. Medical evacuation from remote atolls can cost tens of thousands of dollars without coverage.
  • Download offline maps of whichever atoll you're visiting before you arrive. Mobile data can be patchy on smaller islands.
  • Be cautious with budget water taxis and local dhoni boat transfers in rough weather. Always check sea conditions before setting out, particularly between May and October during the southwest monsoon season.
  • Respect marine life — do not touch coral, feed fish, or ride sea turtles. Beyond being ecologically damaging, it can also result in fines.
  • On local islands like Maafushi or Dhigurah, observe the "bikini beach" rules — most guesthouses will point you to a designated area where Western swimwear is acceptable.

Getting There

All international flights arrive at Velana International Airport (MLE), located just a short water taxi ride from Malé. Major airlines including Emirates, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, and Turkish Airlines offer connections from most global hubs, with return fares from Europe and North America typically ranging from $600 to $1,500 depending on the season.

From MLE, getting to your resort or guesthouse island requires a second leg — either a speedboat transfer (20 minutes to 2 hours, typically $30–$100 each way), a domestic flight with Maldivian Airlines or Trans Maldivian Airways seaplanes (a truly spectacular way to arrive, though pricier at $150–$500 per person), or a combination of public ferry and local transfer for budget travellers heading to guesthouses in South Malé Atoll.

Accommodation Options

Budget: Guesthouses on local islands like Maafushi, Thulusdhoo, or Fulidhoo offer comfortable rooms from around $50–$100 per night. These are fantastic for divers and backpackers who want an authentic Maldivian experience without the resort price tag.

Mid-range: Boutique resorts and mid-tier resort islands such as Meeru Island Resort or Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma offer great facilities — house reefs, restaurants, water sports — for $200–$400 per night.

Luxury: The Maldives is legendary for its ultra-luxury overwater villas. Properties like Soneva Fushi, Six Senses Laamu, and Gili Lankanfushi offer extraordinary experiences from $800 to well over $3,000 per night, often including meals and activities.
