Day Trips: Medellín, Colombia

Day Trips from Medellín, Colombia

Medellín has earned its place as one of South America's most exciting city destinations, but the real magic often lies just beyond its borders. Whether you're chasing waterfalls, colonial cobblestones, or cloud-forest coffee farms, the Antioquia region surrounding the City of Eternal Spring delivers some of the most rewarding day trips on the continent.

Overview

Medellín sits at an elevation of around 5,000 feet in the Aburrá Valley, which means the surrounding landscape is spectacularly varied. Within two hours of the city you can reach traditional pueblos that feel frozen in time, lush nature reserves, and some of Colombia's most celebrated coffee-growing territory. The day-trip scene here is well established, with reliable transport links and a growing network of local guides making it easier than ever to explore independently or on an organised tour.

Top reasons to venture out from Medellín include:

  • The colourful, flower-draped facades of Guatapé, one of Colombia's most photogenic towns
  • El Peñol, a 650-foot monolithic rock with panoramic views over a reservoir
  • Santa Fe de Antioquia, a beautifully preserved colonial town about 80 kilometres northwest of the city
  • Jardín, a quiet Andean pueblo surrounded by coffee farms and verdant hills
  • Parque Arví, a nature reserve accessible by the city's iconic Metrocable

Essential Information

Colombia's currency is the Colombian peso (COP), though costs below are referenced in USD for convenience. The exchange rate hovers around 4,000 COP per US dollar, so your money goes a long way. English is not widely spoken outside Medellín's tourist neighbourhoods like El Poblado and Laureles, so a few phrases of Spanish will serve you well on day trips into smaller towns.

A day trip to Guatapé and El Peñol typically costs between $15 and $30 USD per person including transport and entrance fees. Climbing El Peñol costs around $5 USD, and the views from the top — stretching over dozens of emerald-green islands — are absolutely worth the 740 steps. In Guatapé itself, lunch at a local restaurant will run you $5 to $8 USD for a full meal with juice.

Santa Fe de Antioquia is best visited on weekdays to avoid weekend crowds from Medellín. Entrance to the town is free, and the main draw is simply wandering its whitewashed streets and visiting the Church of Santa Bárbara. Budget around $20 USD for a round-trip bus ticket and meals.

Practical Tips

  • Leave early. Most buses to popular destinations like Guatapé depart from the Norte Bus Terminal (Terminal del Norte) and run from around 6:00 a.m. Arriving by mid-morning lets you beat tour groups to the top of El Peñol.
  • Use the Metro system to reach the bus terminals — it's safe, clean, and costs less than $1 USD per journey.
  • For Parque Arví, take Metro Line A to Acevedo, then transfer to the Metrocable Santo Domingo line, followed by the Arví cable car. The combined cable car fare is around $3 USD for tourists.
  • Jardín requires an overnight stay or a very early departure to make the most of it — it's roughly three hours from Medellín by bus from the Sur Bus Terminal.
  • Carry small denomination cash in pesos. Many rural cafés and market stalls do not accept cards.
  • Sunscreen and a light rain jacket are essential year-round given Medellín's variable Andean climate.

Getting There

Medellín is served by José María Córdova International Airport (MDE), located about 45 minutes east of the city in Rionegro. Direct flights operate from major US hubs including Miami, New York (JFK and Newark), and Fort Lauderdale with airlines such as American Airlines, JetBlue, and LATAM. From the UK and Europe, connections typically route through Bogotá or Panama City. Round-trip fares from Miami can be found for as little as $250 USD when booked in advance, while transatlantic fares from London average $600 to $900 USD depending on the season.

From the airport, shared shuttle buses to El Poblado cost around $5 USD and are the most convenient option for independent travellers. Taxis are available but agree on a fare before you depart — expect to pay $20 to $25 USD for the full journey into the city.

Accommodation Options

Medellín offers excellent accommodation across all budgets, with El Poblado and Laureles being the most popular bases for travellers.

  • Budget: Selina Medellín El Poblado and Black Sheep Hostel offer dorm beds from $12 to $18 USD per night, with social atmospheres and helpful staff who can organise day trips.
  • Mid-range: Hotel Dann Carlton and Casa Dann Carlton sit in prime Poblado locations with comfortable rooms from $70 to $110 USD per night, including breakfast at some properties.
  • Luxury: The Hyatt Regency Medellín offers sleek modern rooms with stunning city views from around $180 USD per night, along with a rooftop pool and top-tier service that makes a perfect home base between excursions.
