Safety Tips for Travellers: Medellín, Colombia

March 22, 2026AirConnect Editors

Introduction

Medellín has rewritten its story in spectacular fashion — once infamous, now celebrated as one of South America's most exciting city destinations. But like any major city, knowing how to navigate it smartly makes all the difference between a trip you'll rave about and one you'd rather forget.

Overview

Nestled in the Andes at a comfortable 5,000 feet above sea level, Medellín earns its nickname "La Ciudad de la Eterna Primavera" — the City of Eternal Spring — with near-perfect temperatures hovering between 64°F and 82°F year-round. With a population of around 2.5 million, it's Colombia's second-largest city and a genuine hub of innovation, culture, food, and nightlife. Visitors come for the colourful street art of Comuna 13, the lush gardens of El Poblado, world-class coffee, and a warmth from locals that consistently surprises first-time visitors.

Colombia's tourism industry has grown dramatically over the past decade, and Medellín sits at the centre of that transformation. The city invested heavily in public infrastructure, education, and urban renewal — and it shows. That said, awareness and preparation remain essential for any traveller heading here.

Essential Information

  • Currency: Colombian Peso (COP). As of 2024, approximately 4,000 COP equals $1 USD. ATMs are widely available, and most mid-range and upscale venues accept cards.
  • Language: Spanish is the official language. English is spoken in tourist-heavy areas like El Poblado, but learning a few basic phrases goes a long way.
  • Visa: Citizens of the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and most EU countries receive a free 90-day tourist stamp on arrival — no visa required.
  • Safety rating: Medellín has improved dramatically in safety, but it is still a city that rewards awareness. Stick to well-travelled neighbourhoods, particularly at night.
  • Scopolamine ("Burundanga"): This drug, used to incapacitate victims, is a known risk in Colombian cities. Never accept drinks or cigarettes from strangers, and be cautious in nightlife settings.
  • Emergency number: 123 (police, ambulance, and fire across Colombia).

Practical Tips

  • Stay in safe neighbourhoods: El Poblado is the most tourist-friendly area, with excellent restaurants, hostels, and hotels. Laureles and Envigado are great alternatives — slightly quieter, more local, and equally safe.
  • Use the Metro and Cable Cars: Medellín's metro system is clean, affordable (around $0.80 USD per trip), and one of the safest ways to get around. The iconic cable cars (Metrocable) connect hillside communities and offer stunning views.
  • Download trusted apps: Use InDriver or Cabify instead of hailing taxis off the street. Unofficial taxis carry higher risks — always book through a verified app.
  • Keep valuables discreet: Avoid using your phone openly in busy streets. Carry a small day bag rather than an expensive backpack, and leave flashy jewellery at home.
  • Visit Comuna 13 on a tour: This neighbourhood is a must-see for its extraordinary street art and resilience story, but going with a reputable local guide is strongly recommended, especially for first-time visitors.
  • Watch your drinks: In Parque Lleras (El Poblado's nightlife hub), exercise caution and keep an eye on your beverages at all times.
  • Day trips are generally safe: Guatapé, roughly 1.5 hours from Medellín, is a popular and very safe day trip with beautiful scenery and the famous El Peñol rock. Buses depart from the Norte terminal for around $5 USD each way.

Getting There

Medellín is served by José María Córdova International Airport (MDE), located about 45 minutes from the city centre in Rionegro. Major airlines including American Airlines, Avianca, Copa Airlines, and JetBlue offer connections from US cities such as Miami, New York, and Fort Lauderdale. From Europe, most routes connect through Bogotá (BOG) or Panama City. A one-way taxi from MDE to El Poblado runs approximately $25–$35 USD, while shared shuttle services offer a cheaper alternative at around $10–$15 USD per person.

Accommodation Options

Budget: Hostels in El Poblado like Selina or The Wandering Paisa offer dorm beds from around $12–$18 USD per night and strong communities of fellow travellers.

Mid-range: Aparthotels and boutique guesthouses in Laureles or El Poblado typically run $50–$100 USD per night and offer excellent value, often including breakfast and rooftop terraces.

Luxury: The Charlee Hotel in El Poblado is a local favourite with rooftop pools, city views, and polished service starting from around $150 USD per night. Casa Dann Carlton and Hotel Dann Medellín are also excellent upscale options.
