Complete Travel Guide: Melbourne, Australia

Melbourne is the kind of city that gets under your skin and refuses to let go. From its world-class coffee culture and buzzing laneway bars to stunning coastal drives and a thriving arts scene, Australia's second-largest city consistently ranks as one of the most liveable — and most loveable — destinations on the planet. Whether you're planning a quick stopover or a full two-week adventure, this guide covers everything you need to know before you go.

Overview

Situated in the state of Victoria in southeastern Australia, Melbourne is a sprawling, cosmopolitan city of around five million people. It sits on Port Phillip Bay and is flanked by the famous Yarra River, which winds through its heart and gives the city much of its character. Melbourne is celebrated for its cultural diversity, exceptional food scene, and passionate sporting culture — AFL football here is practically a religion.

So why visit Melbourne? The short answer is that it offers something for every type of traveller. Art lovers will find world-class galleries and street art in the Fitzroy and Collingwood neighbourhoods. Foodies can spend weeks exploring everything from Vietnamese noodle houses in Footscray to degustation menus in the CBD. Families, solo adventurers, and couples alike will find a city that rewards curiosity at every turn.

Essential Information

  • Currency: Australian Dollar (AUD). As of 2025, roughly 1 USD equals approximately 1.55 AUD.
  • Language: English, though you'll hear dozens of languages spoken across the city's diverse neighbourhoods.
  • Time Zone: Australian Eastern Time (AEDT), UTC+11 in summer, UTC+10 in winter.
  • Visa Requirements: Most visitors from the US, UK, Canada, and EU need an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA), which costs around $20 USD and is processed online within minutes.
  • Best Time to Visit: March to May (autumn) and September to November (spring) offer the most pleasant weather, with mild temperatures between 57°F and 72°F. Melbourne's weather is notoriously unpredictable, so always pack layers.
  • Power: Type I plugs, 230V. Bring a universal adapter.

Practical Tips

Getting around Melbourne is straightforward once you pick up a Myki card — a reusable transit card used across trams, trains, and buses. You can load it at any 7-Eleven or station. The iconic free City Circle tram loops around the CBD and is a great way to orient yourself on arrival, completely free of charge.

A few local tips worth knowing before you arrive:

  • Melbourne's café culture is serious business. Skip the chains and head to Fitzroy, Collingwood, or St Kilda for independent specialty coffee. A flat white will set you back around $4–5 USD.
  • Explore the laneways. Hosier Lane, AC/DC Lane, and Degraves Street are iconic, but wander off the map and you'll find hidden bars, galleries, and street art that aren't in the guidebooks.
  • A meal at the Queen Victoria Market (open Tuesday through Sunday) is a must. Fresh produce, artisan goods, and cheap, excellent food stalls make it a favourite with locals and tourists alike.
  • If you're visiting in January, the Australian Open tennis tournament transforms the city into a celebration — book accommodation well in advance.
  • Uber operates throughout the city, but taxis are also widely available. A ride from the airport to the CBD costs approximately $40–55 USD.

Getting There

Melbourne is served by Melbourne Airport (MEL), also known as Tullamarine Airport, located about 14 miles northwest of the CBD. It is Australia's second busiest international airport and connects directly to dozens of global destinations.

From the United States, you'll typically fly into MEL via Los Angeles (LAX) or San Francisco (SFO), with carriers including Qantas, United, and American Airlines. Flight times from the US West Coast average around 16–17 hours nonstop. From the UK, expect around 22–24 hours with one stop, usually in Dubai, Singapore, or Hong Kong.

Once you land, the SkyBus is the most affordable transfer option, running 24/7 between the airport and Southern Cross Station in the CBD for approximately $16 USD one way. From there, the Myki network puts the entire city at your fingertips.

Accommodation Options

Melbourne caters to every budget, and choosing the right neighbourhood is just as important as choosing the right hotel.

  • Budget ($40–$90/night): Hostels and budget hotels cluster around Flinders Street and the CBD. Space Hotel and Nomads Melbourne are popular with backpackers and solo travellers looking for a social atmosphere without blowing the budget.
  • Mid-Range ($120–$220/night): Boutique hotels in Fitzroy and South Yarra offer excellent value and put you close to some of the city's best dining and nightlife. The Lyall Hotel in South Yarra is a local favourite for its elegant, understated style.
  • Luxury ($280+/night): For five-star experiences, look no further than the Crown Towers on the Southbank or the Park Hyatt near Fitzroy Gardens. Both offer stunning city views, impeccable service, and world-class amenities.
