Budget Travel Guide: Mexico City, Mexico

Mexico City is one of the most underrated travel destinations on the planet — a sprawling, vibrant metropolis packed with world-class museums, incredible street food, and a cultural depth that will keep you busy for weeks. The best part? Your dollar goes remarkably far here, making it an ideal destination for budget-conscious travellers who refuse to compromise on experience.

Overview

Mexico City, known locally as CDMX (Ciudad de México), is the capital and largest city of Mexico, sitting at an elevation of roughly 7,350 feet above sea level. With a population of over 21 million in the greater metro area, it ranks among the largest cities in the Western Hemisphere. Yet despite its size, it manages to feel approachable, neighbourhood by neighbourhood.

Why visit? The short answer is that few cities offer this much for so little. You can explore ancient Aztec ruins at Teotihuacán, wander world-renowned art museums for under $5, eat some of the best tacos of your life for less than $1 each, and spend an evening in a rooftop bar in the trendy Roma Norte neighbourhood — all in a single day. CDMX rewards curious, adventurous travellers in a way that few destinations can match.

Essential Information

  • Currency: Mexican Peso (MXN). As of 2024, roughly 17–18 MXN to 1 USD. Always pay in pesos to avoid unfavourable exchange rates.
  • Language: Spanish. A few basic phrases go a long way and are genuinely appreciated by locals.
  • Best time to visit: March through May offers warm, dry weather and fewer crowds. December and January are cool but festive.
  • Safety: Like any major city, stay aware of your surroundings. Stick to well-trafficked neighbourhoods like Condesa, Roma, Polanco, and Coyoacán, especially at night.
  • Altitude: The high elevation catches many visitors off guard. Take it easy your first day, stay hydrated, and avoid alcohol until you acclimatise.

Practical Tips

  • Use the Metro: The Mexico City Metro is one of the cheapest and most efficient urban rail systems in the world. A single ride costs around $0.25 USD. Avoid rush hours (7–9am and 5–8pm) when it gets extremely crowded.
  • Eat where locals eat: Street tacos, tortas, and tamales from market stalls and local fondas (small family-run restaurants) are both delicious and incredibly affordable — expect to spend $5–8 USD for a filling meal.
  • Get a SIM card: Pick up a Telcel or AT&T Mexico SIM at the airport or any OXXO convenience store. A data plan with several gigabytes runs around $10–15 USD per month.
  • Use Uber or Beat: Ride-hailing apps are safe, reliable, and affordable. A ride across central neighbourhoods rarely exceeds $4–6 USD. Avoid hailing taxis off the street.
  • Free museum Sundays: Most major national museums, including the extraordinary Museo Nacional de Antropología, offer free admission to Mexican nationals and residents on Sundays. As a foreigner, entry is typically $4–5 USD any day of the week — still excellent value.

Getting There

Mexico City is served by two airports. The main hub is Benito Juárez International Airport (MEX), located just east of the city centre and well connected to most major North American and international cities. Direct flights from New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Miami run frequently, with round-trip prices ranging from $250 to $550 USD depending on the season and how far in advance you book.

In 2022, Mexico also opened the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (NLU) to the north of the city, which handles some domestic routes and select international carriers. Check both airports when comparing fares. From MEX, the new Línea 1 Metro extension connects directly to the airport and drops you in the city centre for that same $0.25 fare — one of the best airport transport deals anywhere in the world.

Accommodation Options

Budget ($15–40/night): Hostels in Roma Norte, Condesa, and the Historic Centre offer clean, social environments perfect for solo travellers and backpackers. Look for places like Hostel Home or El Patio 77, which also operates as a boutique guesthouse with a focus on sustainable travel.

Mid-Range ($50–120/night): Boutique hotels in Condesa and Polanco offer excellent value at this price point. You'll get stylish rooms, great locations, and often a rooftop or courtyard that makes coming back after a long day feel like a genuine treat.

Luxury ($150+/night): For those looking to splurge, hotels like the St. Regis Mexico City or the boutique Casa Polanco deliver world-class service in an unbeatable setting. Even Mexico City's luxury tier is often cheaper than equivalent hotels in New York or London.
