Safety Tips for Travellers: Paris, France

Paris is one of the most visited cities on Earth, and for good reason — but like any major metropolis, it comes with its own set of challenges for the unprepared traveller. Whether you're strolling along the Seine or navigating the Métro at rush hour, a little knowledge goes a long way. Here's everything you need to stay safe, smart, and stress-free in the City of Light.

Overview

Paris is the capital of France and home to roughly 2.1 million people within the city limits, swelling to over 12 million across the greater metropolitan area. It consistently ranks among the top three most visited cities in the world, drawing approximately 44 million tourists annually. Beyond the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre, Paris offers world-class cuisine, vibrant neighbourhoods, and a cultural depth that rewards repeat visits. It is generally a safe destination, but petty crime — particularly pickpocketing — is a real concern in tourist-heavy areas.

Essential Information

  • Currency: Euro (€). As of 2024, roughly $1 USD equals approximately €0.92. ATMs are widely available, but notify your bank before travelling.
  • Language: French is the official language. Basic French phrases go a long way — locals genuinely appreciate the effort.
  • Emergency number: 112 (EU-wide emergency line). Police can also be reached on 17, and medical emergencies on 15.
  • Visa requirements: US, UK, Canadian, and Australian passport holders can enter France visa-free for up to 90 days. Note that the EU's ETIAS travel authorisation system is expected to launch in 2025 and will require a small pre-registration fee.
  • Health: No vaccinations are required. Travel insurance with medical coverage is strongly recommended — hospital treatment without it can be costly.
  • Tap water: Completely safe to drink throughout the city.

Practical Tips

Pickpocketing is the number one safety concern for visitors to Paris. The areas around the Eiffel Tower, Notre-Dame, Sacré-Cœur in Montmartre, and busy Métro lines (particularly lines 1 and 4) are hotspots. Keep bags zipped and worn across the front of your body, avoid displaying expensive jewellery or phones unnecessarily, and be wary of strangers who approach you with petitions or "found" rings — these are common distraction scams.

  • Use a money belt or hidden pouch for your passport and larger amounts of cash.
  • Avoid unlicensed taxi touts outside airports and train stations — always use the official taxi rank or apps like Uber or Bolt.
  • The neighbourhood of Pigalle (particularly its northern edges) can feel rough at night. Stay aware of your surroundings and stick to well-lit streets.
  • At night, the Bois de Boulogne and Bois de Vincennes parks are best avoided entirely.
  • Keep a digital and physical copy of your passport stored separately from the original.
  • If someone grabs your bag or you witness a theft, do not chase — contact the police and report it at the nearest commissariat for insurance purposes.

Paris is also well-lit, has a visible police presence in tourist zones, and is generally very welcoming to solo travellers, LGBTQ+ visitors, and families alike. The Marais district is particularly known for being inclusive and vibrant.

Getting There

Most international flights arrive at Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG), located about 25 kilometres northeast of central Paris. Direct flights from New York typically run 7 to 8 hours, from Los Angeles around 11 hours, and from London under 2 hours. Expect round-trip fares from the US to range from $450 to $1,200 depending on season and how far in advance you book. Orly Airport (ORY) handles some European and domestic routes and is closer to the city centre.

From CDG, the RER B train is the most affordable connection into the city at around $12 USD one-way, taking roughly 45 minutes to central stations like Gare du Nord and Châtelet–Les Halles. Taxis from CDG to central Paris have fixed rates — approximately $60 to the Right Bank and $70 to the Left Bank — and are safe and metered. Always use the official taxi rank.

Accommodation Options

Paris has accommodation to suit every budget, though prices vary significantly by arrondissement. The 1st, 4th, 6th, and 7th arrondissements are central and prestigious but come at a premium.

  • Budget ($60–$120/night): Hostels and budget hotels in areas like République, Nation, or near Gare du Nord offer good value. Generator Paris and St Christopher's Inn are well-regarded options with strong safety reputations.
  • Mid-range ($150–$300/night): Boutique hotels in the Marais or Saint-Germain-des-Prés offer comfort and character. Look for properties with 24-hour reception and secure key-card access.
  • Luxury ($400+/night): The 8th arrondissement around the Champs-Élysées is home to iconic properties like the Hôtel de Crillon and Le Bristol, offering impeccable security and concierge services for complete peace of mind.
