Best Things To Do: São Paulo, Brazil

São Paulo is the kind of city that grabs you by the collar and refuses to let go. South America's largest metropolis pulses with world-class art, an insane food scene, and neighbourhoods that each feel like a city within a city. Whether you have three days or three weeks, here is everything you need to know to make the most of it.

Overview

São Paulo sits on a high plateau in southeastern Brazil at roughly 2,600 feet above sea level, which keeps temperatures mild year-round — expect highs between 65°F and 82°F depending on the season. The city is home to around 22 million people in its greater metro area, making it one of the five largest cities on Earth. It is the financial and cultural engine of Brazil, drawing chefs, artists, and entrepreneurs from every corner of the globe. Visitors often arrive expecting a grey concrete jungle and leave completely surprised by the parks, galleries, and vibrant street life tucked between the skyscrapers. The best time to visit is April through June or August through October, when rainfall is lower and the city hums at a comfortable pace.

Top 10 Activities

  • Explore Vila Madalena: This bohemian neighbourhood is the beating heart of São Paulo's street art scene. Walk down Beco do Batman, a narrow alley covered floor to ceiling in murals, and spend the afternoon hopping between independent galleries and wine bars.
  • Visit the São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP): Suspended on two massive red concrete beams above Avenida Paulista, MASP is an architectural icon housing works by Van Gogh, Raphael, and Picasso. Entry costs around $8 USD and is free on Tuesdays.
  • Spend a Sunday at Ibirapuera Park: São Paulo's answer to Central Park is best experienced on a Sunday when locals jog, skateboard, and picnic under the trees. The park also contains three top-tier museums including the Museum of Modern Art (MAM).
  • Eat at the Mercadão (Mercado Municipal): This enormous 1933 market in the city centre is famous for its stained-glass windows and its mortadella sandwich — a towering creation that costs about $5 USD and is absolutely worth the queue.
  • Explore the Liberdade neighbourhood: Home to one of the largest Japanese communities outside Japan, Liberdade is packed with ramen shops, karaoke bars, and a lively weekend street market on Praça da Liberdade.
  • Catch a concert at Sala São Paulo: Housed inside a beautifully restored 1930s railway station, this concert hall has near-perfect acoustics and hosts performances almost every night. Tickets start from around $15 USD.
  • Take a street food tour of Pinheiros: This trendy neighbourhood is full of craft beer spots, natural wine bars, and small plates restaurants. A self-guided walk along Rua Cardeal Arcoverde will keep you fed and happy for hours.
  • Visit Pinacoteca do Estado: One of the oldest art museums in Brazil, the Pinacoteca sits inside a gorgeous brick building near Luz station and holds a brilliant collection of Brazilian paintings and sculptures. Entry is around $4 USD.
  • Shop in Oscar Freire: If you want to browse high-end Brazilian fashion alongside great coffee shops and people-watching, Rua Oscar Freire in Jardins is the street to know. Even window shopping here feels like a treat.
  • Experience the nightlife in Consolação: São Paulo does not sleep early. The strip along Rua Augusta and Consolação comes alive after midnight with clubs, live music venues, and late-night food stalls. Expect to pay a $10–$20 USD cover at most clubs.

Practical Tips

  • Use the metro for longer journeys — it is safe, cheap (around $1 USD per ride), and covers most tourist areas including Paulista, Consolação, and Liberdade.
  • For shorter hops, 99 and Uber both work reliably and cost a fraction of taxis. Always book from inside before stepping outside.
  • Carry smaller bills in cash for street food and markets, but most restaurants and shops accept cards including international ones.
  • Learn five words of Portuguese. Locals are warm and appreciative when visitors make even the smallest effort to speak the language.
  • Stay in Jardins, Pinheiros, or Vila Madalena for the safest and most visitor-friendly experience. Avoid walking with expensive items on display, especially near the city centre at night.

Getting There

Most international flights land at Guarulhos International Airport (GRU), which sits about 17 miles northeast of the city centre. Direct flights operate from Miami, New York JFK, London Heathrow, and Lisbon among many others. Expect flight times of roughly 9–10 hours from the US East Coast and 11 hours from the UK. From GRU, an Uber to central São Paulo costs around $20–$30 USD and takes 30–60 minutes depending on traffic. An airport bus called the Airport Bus Service runs every 30 minutes and costs around $8 USD, dropping passengers at several central metro stations.

Accommodation Options

Budget: Hostel 550 in Vila Madalena offers dorms from around $18 USD per night in a great location with a lively social atmosphere.

Mid-range: Hotel Emiliano and Hotel Fasano sit at the top of this category, but for solid value the WZ Jardins delivers stylish rooms from around $90–$120 USD per night in a prime area.
