Safety Tips for Travellers: Singapore, Singapore

March 22, 2026AirConnect Editors

Welcome to the Lion City

Singapore is one of the safest, most efficient, and most rewarding destinations in Southeast Asia β€” but that doesn't mean you should leave your travel smarts at the departure gate. Whether you're a first-time visitor or a seasoned Asia traveller, knowing the local rules and staying street-smart will make your trip smoother, cheaper, and far more enjoyable. Here's everything you need to know before you land in the Lion City.

Overview

Singapore is a sovereign city-state sitting at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula. With a population of around 5.9 million people packed into just 280 square miles, it punches well above its weight in terms of food, culture, architecture, and sheer livability. Consistently ranked among the world's safest cities, Singapore boasts low crime rates, clean streets, and an infrastructure that genuinely works. Still, its strict laws catch many tourists off guard, and petty scams do exist β€” so preparation is everything.

Essential Information

Before you travel, get familiar with the basics that will shape your visit:

  • Currency: Singapore Dollar (SGD). As of 2024, 1 USD β‰ˆ 1.35 SGD. ATMs are widely available and offer fair rates. Avoid currency exchange booths at Changi Airport β€” rates in the city centre, particularly in Lucky Plaza or People's Park Complex, are significantly better.
  • Laws and fines: Singapore enforces its laws firmly. Chewing gum in public, littering, jaywalking, and smoking in non-designated areas can all result in hefty on-the-spot fines ranging from $150 to $1,000 SGD. Drug trafficking carries the death penalty β€” no exceptions.
  • Health: No vaccinations are required, but Hepatitis A and typhoid shots are recommended. Tap water is completely safe to drink. Singapore is humid year-round, so stay hydrated and use strong sunscreen.
  • Emergency numbers: Police: 999 | Ambulance/Fire: 995 | Non-emergency police line: 1800-255-0000.
  • LGBTQ+ travellers: Same-sex sexual activity was decriminalised in 2022, but public displays of affection may still attract unwanted attention. The city is largely welcoming, especially in areas like Chinatown and Tiong Bahru.

Practical Tips

Singapore rewards travellers who do a little homework. Here are some on-the-ground tips to keep your trip safe and cost-effective:

  • Transport: The MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) is your best friend. A single journey rarely exceeds $2.50 SGD (about $1.85 USD). Get an EZ-Link card or use contactless payment on arrival β€” it's cheaper than buying individual tickets.
  • Taxis and ride-hailing: Grab is the dominant ride-hailing app. It's safe, transparent on pricing, and far easier than negotiating with taxi drivers. Always use official platforms β€” avoid unlicensed touts, especially near Orchard Road at night.
  • Scams to watch for: Gem and jewellery scams targeting tourists in Chinatown, fake "free" cultural shows that end with pressure to buy, and overpriced seafood restaurants near Clarke Quay. Always check the menu prices before sitting down.
  • Neighbourhood safety: Every neighbourhood in Singapore is considered safe, but Little India on weekend nights can get crowded and occasionally rowdy. Geylang is Singapore's red-light district β€” perfectly safe to visit for its famous durian stalls, but be aware of your surroundings after midnight.
  • Food and water: Hawker centres are not only safe to eat at β€” they're the best food experience in the city. A full meal at a hawker centre costs $3–$6 USD. Look for stalls with long queues or Michelin Bib Gourmand recognition.
  • Travel insurance: Always purchase comprehensive travel insurance before departing. Medical care in Singapore is world-class but expensive for uninsured visitors.

Getting There

Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) is consistently rated the world's best airport, and getting there is straightforward from most major cities. Direct flights from Los Angeles take around 17–18 hours, from London approximately 13 hours, and from Sydney about 8 hours. Airlines serving SIN include Singapore Airlines, Qantas, British Airways, Emirates, and Cathay Pacific. Budget carriers like Scoot and AirAsia also connect Singapore to dozens of regional Asian hubs, making it an excellent base for wider Southeast Asia travel. Flying into Changi Terminal 1, 2, or 4 β€” all connected by the free Skytrain β€” puts you just 30 minutes from the city centre via the MRT for around $1.80 USD.

Accommodation Options

Singapore has accommodation to suit every budget, though prices are higher than elsewhere in Southeast Asia:

  • Budget ($30–$70/night USD): Capsule hotels and hostels in Bugis, Little India, and Chinatown offer clean, well-located digs. Pods by SCP and The Pod @ Beach Road are consistently well-reviewed.
  • Mid-range ($100–$220/night USD): Boutique hotels in Tiong Bahru or Kampong Glam offer character and great access to local life. Hotel Mono and The Sultan are popular choices.
  • Luxury ($300+/night USD): The Marina Bay Sands is the iconic choice with its rooftop infinity pool. For something more intimate, Capella Singapore on Sentosa Island offers exceptional service and lush surroundings.
