Old Dubai FAQ

Which area is "Old Dubai" and how do I get there from DXB airport?

Old Dubai refers to the historic Al Fahidi / Bur Dubai area on the western bank of the Dubai Creek, and Deira on the eastern bank. From Dubai International (DXB), take the Metro Red Line to Union Station (~15 min, AED 3.5), then a water taxi (Abra) to cross the Creek (AED 1). Taxi from DXB is ~25 min, AED 30–45.

What is the Dubai Gold Souk?

Dubai Gold Souk in Deira is one of the world's largest gold markets with over 380 retailers. It holds 25% of the world's traded gold. Prices are set by the Dubai Gold Rate (updated daily), and bargaining on making charges is expected. Open 10am–10pm, closed Fridays 1–4pm.

What is the Al Fahidi Historic District?

Al Fahidi (formerly Bastakiya) is Dubai's best-preserved historic neighbourhood — wind towers (barjeels), coral and gypsum courtyard houses, and the Dubai Museum. It dates to the 19th century when Persian merchants settled here. Now hosts art galleries, the Majlis Gallery, and XVA boutique hotel.

Is the Dubai Spice Souk worth visiting?

Yes. The Spice Souk in Deira is compact (5 min walk from Gold Souk) with open-air sacks of saffron, frankincense, dried rose petals, sumac, and Omani limes. Prices are 30–50% cheaper than malls. Combine with the Gold Souk and Deira Fish Market for a half-day heritage walk.
