About Taichung

Taichung is Taiwan's second-largest city and its de facto cultural capital — a place with a more relaxed, liveable atmosphere than Taipei, a flourishing contemporary arts scene, and a food culture that has contributed some of Taiwan's most beloved dishes and drinks to the world. The city's mild climate, fewer typhoon days than the north, and wide tree-lined boulevards give it a quality of life that consistently draws young Taiwanese professionals and artists.

The city's creative character is most visible in the Cultural and Creative Industries Park (Taichung Cultural Creative Park), a converted tobacco factory that now hosts galleries, studios, and weekend markets. The National Taichung Theater — an architectural marvel by Pritzker Prize winner Toyo Ito — has transformed the city's cultural identity since opening in 2016. The 1st Street (Yi Zhong Street) area hosts independent boutiques, specialty coffee shops, and vintage stores that reflect the city's creative independent spirit.

Sun Moon Lake, accessible by a 45-minute bus or car journey from central Taichung, is arguably Taiwan's most beautiful natural landscape. The lake sits at 748m altitude surrounded by mountains and tea gardens, with the indigenous Thao people's culture adding depth to what would otherwise be simply a beautiful natural escape. Cycling around the lake, taking a boat to Lalu Island, and sampling local aboriginal cuisine make it one of Taiwan's most rewarding day trips.

Travel Tips · Taichung

  • Visit Fengjia Night Market on a weekday evening — weekends bring enormous crowds from across Central Taiwan and queues at popular stalls can be 30+ minutes
  • Make the pilgrimage to Chun Shui Tang's original Saisho location to drink bubble tea where it was invented — order the original version with tapioca pearls
  • Rent an e-bike or YouBike (Taiwan's ubiquitous bike-share) to cycle the Houfeng Bikeway along the Dajia River — one of Taiwan's best urban cycling routes
  • Take the HSR (High Speed Rail) from Taipei to Taichung (50 min, TWD 700) rather than the bus — much faster and the Taichung HSR station connects by bus to the city centre
  • Download the Taichung Bus app for real-time bus tracking — Taichung's bus network is extensive but infrequent; knowing arrival times prevents long waits
