Chiang Mai is one of SE Asia's safest tourist cities. The main scams are tuk-tuk overcharge + ethical-tourism scams (elephant + tiger sanctuaries with poor animal welfare marketed as "ethical"). Doi Suthep + Old City are the tourist zones where any scam attempts cluster.
"Ethical" elephant sanctuary that isn't
Camp advertises "no riding, ethical, sanctuary" but includes bathing sessions where you interact closely with elephants.
Even bathing/petting elephants requires stress-inducing training (positive punishment via bull-hooks). Genuine ethical sanctuaries (Elephant Nature Park, BEES) allow observation-only.

Cheap "temple tour" tuk-tuk → shopping loop
Tuk-tuk driver offers "all-day temple tour" for THB 200 (USD 6).
The USD 6 is real — but the tour includes forced stops at gem shops, silk factories, tailor shops, and jewellery stores where driver gets commission. Aggressive sales pressure at each stop.
- ✓Book real temple tours through your hotel or Klook.
- ✓If tempted by cheap tuk-tuk, say upfront "no shopping stops" — most drivers will refuse (no commission).
- →Refuse to enter shops. Driver won't abandon you mid-tour.
