Hanoi's Old Quarter is scam central — high tourist density, cash-heavy economy, and a well-established set of predictable scams. Taxi meter tampering + coconut vendor overcharge + fake motorbike rental are the top three. Most scams cost $10-50; a few (illegal-taxi kidnap-and-charge) can escalate.
Taxi meter tampering (fast-ticking meter)
Taxi at Noi Bai airport arrivals or in the Old Quarter with unfamiliar branding, rushing you into the car.
A modified meter runs 2-3x faster than normal. A 10-minute ride from Hoan Kiem Lake to the Old Quarter that should cost VND 60,000 (~$2.40) hits VND 200,000+.
- ✓Use ONLY Mai Linh (green) or Vinasun (white with red/green stripes) — the two nationally-known meter-taxi companies.
- ✓Or use Grab / Xanh SM (EV) apps — price fixed before ride.
- ✓From Noi Bai: use the official airport taxi kiosk in arrivals (VND 350,000-400,000 fixed to Old Quarter) OR the Airport Bus 86 (VND 45,000).
- →Refuse to pay the inflated amount. Take a photo of the driver + license plate.
- →Call the taxi company's complaint line (Mai Linh: 1055; Vinasun: 1900 6060) — they investigate their own drivers.
- →Report to Hanoi Tourist Police: +84 24 3826 6789.
Coconut vendor "carry my pole for a photo" → forced purchase
Vendor with a traditional shoulder-pole (donh ganh) full of fruit approaches, offers to let you carry it for a photo.
The photo is free — but after you take it, they insist you buy a coconut or bag of fruit at 5-10x market price. Refusing turns into a loud scene.
- ✓Don't engage. If you want that photo, ask a vendor at a market stall (fixed prices, no ambush).
- ✓Politely say "no, thank you" and keep walking.
- →Just pay the smallest amount to end it — usually VND 50,000. Not worth the drama.
Motorbike rental — passport-hostage damage claim
Rental shop takes your passport as deposit. On return, shop finds "damage" and refuses to return the passport until paid.
Same as Da Lat but higher stakes in Hanoi — some rental shops rent bikes with hidden pre-damage and charge every tourist. Passport-hostage means you can't leave the country until you pay.
- ✓NEVER leave your passport. Pay USD 100-200 cash deposit instead. Reputable shops accept.
- ✓Photograph + video the bike from every angle before departure — dated proof.
- ✓Rent through your hotel or via Bikesbooking / RentalMoto (online, protected).
- →Do not pay. Call Hanoi Tourist Police: +84 24 3826 6789.
- →Contact your embassy — passport withholding is illegal in Vietnam, and embassies take this seriously.
- →Post the shop name on Hanoi Backpackers Facebook + Google Reviews.
Fake-note switch at money-changers or small shops
Money-changer with unusually good rates in Old Quarter. Or small shop giving change for a large bill.
You hand over a large VND 500,000 note; the shopkeeper pretends to check it, quickly swaps it for a fake 500,000 note, then tells you your bill is fake and demands another one.
- ✓Change money at banks (Vietcombank, BIDV, Sacombank) or licensed exchange bureaux with prominent signage.
- ✓Break large notes into smaller ones at your hotel or a bank.
- ✓Photograph your notes before entering shops — if switched, you have proof.
- →File a police report immediately — Vietnamese banks + police are aware of the scam.
Free tour → forced gem shop visit
Cyclo (bike-rickshaw) driver offers "free 30-minute Old Quarter tour". Ends at a gem shop.
The cyclo driver gets commission for delivering tourists to the shop. Aggressive sales pitch pushes fake or heavily marked-up gems.
- ✓Pay for cyclo rides upfront + agree the exact route.
- ✓Don't buy gems in Vietnam unless you're a gem expert. Even real ones are marked up 3-5x for tourists.
- →Refuse to buy. Nothing legal to escalate — it's pressure sales.
