Ho Chi Minh City Tourist Scams

HCMC scams cluster in District 1 (backpacker + tourist zone). Bag snatchings by drive-by motorbikes are the most common serious scam — everything else is variants of Hanoi's taxi + rental playbook. District 1's Nguyen Hue + Bui Vien have the highest concentration.
Drive-by motorbike bag snatching
Walking with bag / phone visible on the road-side arm; two-person motorbike passes slowly.
Passenger grabs bag or phone as the motorbike accelerates. Injuries are common (dragged by strap, hit head from fall). Cameras + iPhones are the top targets.
- ✓Walk with bags on the OPPOSITE side from the road.
- ✓Cross-body straps ONLY — never one-shoulder bags.
- ✓Don't use phones on the street. Step into a shop or cafe first.
- ✓Use money belts under clothes for cash + card + passport.
- →Do NOT chase — you can't catch a motorbike + falls are the injury risk.
- →File report at nearest police station (needed for insurance + embassy)
- →Contact your embassy if passport was in the bag: US +84 28 3520 4200, UK +84 28 3825 1380.
- →Bank card cancellation: call bank immediately.
Fake Vinasun / Mai Linh taxi at Tan Son Nhat
Taxi at SGN arrivals with similar-but-not-exact branding (e.g. "Vinasan" instead of "Vinasun", or Mai Linh green with wrong logo).
Meter runs fast + driver takes long route. Airport-to-District 1 should be VND 200,000-250,000 with real Vinasun/Mai Linh; scam taxis charge VND 500,000-1,000,000.
- ✓Only enter cars with real Vinasun (white with red + green stripes) or Mai Linh (dark green with logo).
- ✓Or use Grab / Be / Xanh SM apps — booked from the app, price fixed.
- ✓Airport bus 152 to District 1 costs VND 6,000 (USD 0.25).
- →Take photo of driver + plate. Report to Vinasun (1900 6060) / Mai Linh (1055).
- →Report to Tourist Police District 1: +84 28 3829 7457.
Shoe-shine hidden-price ambush
Man with shoe-shine kit points at your shoes and starts cleaning them without asking price.
They start cleaning aggressively — very hard to interrupt. When done, they demand USD 10-20 for what should cost VND 30,000 (USD 1.20).
- ✓Refuse loudly + walk away immediately if approached. Don't let them start.
- →Pay the smallest amount to end it. Not worth escalating.
