Step-by-Step: Taking the Haruka Express from KIX

The JR Haruka is the most comfortable and widely used option — especially for travellers with heavy bags or a JR Pass.

1

Arrive at KIX and clear customs

After landing at Kansai International Airport, follow signs for baggage claim and customs. The train stations are in the main terminal building (Terminal 1). If you land at Terminal 2 (LCCs), a free shuttle bus connects you to Terminal 1 in about 5 minutes.

2

Head to the Airport Station (地下 B1 level)

Take the escalators or elevator down to the basement (B1) of the arrivals hall. You will find two separate train stations side by side: 'Nankai Airport Station' (for Nankai lines) and 'JR Kansai Airport Station' (for JR Haruka). Signs are bilingual in Japanese and English.

3

Buy your ticket or top up your IC card

Ticket machines accept cash and credit/debit cards and have English menus. For the Haruka Express, select 'Haruka' from the JR ticket machine. Alternatively, load your Suica or ICOCA card — JR offers a small discount for IC card holders. The Haruka 'Icoca & Haruka' set deal (¥2,000 reserved for one zone) is excellent value if you plan to use transit throughout your stay.

4

Board the Haruka Express (Platform 1 or 2)

The Haruka departs from Platforms 1–2 at JR Kansai Airport Station roughly every 30 minutes. Check the overhead departure board for platform and departure time. The train is clearly marked 'HARUKA' in large letters. It is fully air-conditioned with generous luggage racks above the seats.

5

Ride to your Osaka stop

Key stops: Hineno (30 min), Tennoji (50 min), Shin-Osaka (75 min). Tennoji connects to the Osaka Metro loop line (Midosuji and Tanimachi lines). Shin-Osaka connects to the Shinkansen bullet train network. Announcements are made in Japanese and English.

6

Transfer or exit at your destination

At Tennoji or Shin-Osaka, follow the coloured metro signs to connect to Osaka Metro or other JR lines. Tap your IC card on the reader or insert your paper ticket at the exit gates. Welcome to Osaka!

Insider Tips for 2026

Book Haruka reserved seats online

You can reserve Haruka seats in advance via the JR West English website. During peak seasons (Golden Week, Obon, New Year) trains fill fast — reserve ahead.

Icoca & Haruka set deal

For first-time visitors, the 'Icoca & Haruka' combo ticket starts at ¥2,000 for one zone. You get a pre-loaded IC card plus a discounted Haruka reserved ticket — great value.

Late at night? Check the last train

The last Haruka from KIX departs around 22:16 (check JR West timetables). After that, a taxi to central Osaka costs ¥8,000–¥12,000 and takes 60–80 minutes.

Nankai for budget travellers

The Nankai Airport Express (local, non-limited) at ¥930 is the cheapest train option and runs frequently. It takes 55 minutes to Namba — fine if you pack light and aren't in a hurry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the JR Pass valid on the Haruka Express from KIX?

Yes — the JR Pass covers the unreserved seats on the Haruka Express at no extra cost. Reserved seat tickets require a small surcharge (around ¥530) but can be booked free at any JR green window. If you have the pass, this makes the Haruka by far the most economical option from the airport.

Which train is best for reaching Dotonbori / Shinsaibashi in Namba?

The Nankai Rapi:t is your best bet. It terminates at Namba Station, which is a 5-minute walk from Dotonbori. At ¥1,430 and only 38 minutes, it beats the Haruka for travellers staying in the Namba/Shinsaibashi area. Buy tickets at the Nankai Airport Station ticket machines.

Can I use a contactless payment card (Visa/Mastercard) to board the trains?

As of 2025–2026, Japanese local trains do not widely accept foreign contactless bank cards directly on the fare gates. You should either purchase a paper ticket or load a reloadable IC card (Suica or ICOCA) at the airport. Suica can now be added to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet, making it very convenient for most travellers.
