Step-by-Step: LAX to Downtown LA by Metro

Follow these six steps to get from any LAX terminal to 7th Street/Metro Center in downtown Los Angeles.

1

Exit your terminal and find the LAX-it area

After collecting your baggage, follow blue 'LAX-it' signs to the designated rideshare/taxi plaza. The free Metro shuttle departs from this same area — look for the purple Metro 'G' shuttle signs.

2

Take the free Metro Shuttle G to Aviation/96th St Station

Board the free Metro Shuttle G (purple bus). Runs every 12–15 minutes, 24/7. The ride takes approximately 10–12 minutes to Aviation/96th St Station on the C Line (Green Line).

3

Tap your TAP card or buy a ticket

At the station, use a TAP card (reloadable, $2 card fee) or buy a single-ride ticket at the vending machine. The flat fare is $2.50 per ride. Transfers within 2 hours are free.

4

Ride the C Line (Green) toward Redondo Beach or Norwalk

Board a C Line train heading inbound (toward Norwalk/East). Ride to Willowbrook/Rosa Parks Station — approximately 25 minutes.

5

Transfer to the A Line (Blue) toward Downtown LA

At Willowbrook/Rosa Parks, cross the platform and board an A Line (Blue Line) train toward 7th Street/Metro Center. This leg takes roughly 25–30 minutes.

6

Arrive at 7th Street/Metro Center — the heart of downtown

7th Street/Metro Center is the main downtown hub, connecting to the B, D, and E Lines. From here, walk or transfer to reach your hotel, Union Station, or any downtown neighborhood.

Insider Tips for 2026

  • Buy a TAP card online or at any Metro station ($2 card fee). Reloadable and works on all Metro lines and buses.
  • The Metro app (iOS/Android) shows real-time arrivals and trip planning — download it before you land.
  • Avoid traveling with heavy luggage during weekday rush hours (7–9 AM, 5–7 PM). Mid-morning is ideal.
  • If your hotel is in Santa Monica, Hollywood, or Culver City, use the E Line (Expo) transfer at 7th/Metro Center instead.
  • The A Line runs 24/7 but frequency drops to every 20–30 minutes after midnight.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to take the Metro from LAX at night?

The Metro operates 24/7 and is generally safe. Trains and major stations are monitored by security staff. As with any large-city transit system, stay aware of your surroundings, keep bags close, and use well-lit waiting areas. Night services run less frequently (every 20–30 min vs. 12 min during peak hours), so check real-time schedules on the Metro app before traveling.

How long does it take to get from LAX to downtown LA by Metro?

The total journey — free shuttle to Aviation Station, C Line to Willowbrook, then A Line to 7th/Metro Center — takes approximately 55 to 70 minutes under normal conditions. Factor in 10–15 minutes of wait time between connections, especially during off-peak hours. The entire trip for just $2.50 makes it the most cost-effective option available.

Can I bring luggage on the LA Metro?

Yes. There are no size restrictions on luggage for Metro trains. Large suitcases are permitted and there is standing room near doors. During peak commute hours (7–9 AM and 5–7 PM weekdays) trains can be crowded, so mid-morning and mid-afternoon travel is more comfortable with large bags. Always keep luggage with you and do not block doorways.
