Step-by-Step: Vienna Airport to City by S-Bahn S7

The S7 is our recommended route for most travellers — it's fast, frequent and a fraction of the price of the CAT.

Step 1

Arrive at the Airport Railway Station

After baggage claim, follow the red 'S-Bahn' or blue 'CAT' signs. Both trains depart from the underground station directly beneath Terminal 1 — approximately a 5-minute walk from arrivals.

Step 2

Buy Your Ticket

For the S7, use the ÖBB or Wiener Linien ticket machines. Select 'Vienna Airport — Zone 100+C'. A single ticket costs €4.20 and covers all onward travel on U-Bahn, trams and buses inside Vienna for 24 hours.

Step 3

Board the S7 Towards Wien Floridsdorf

S7 trains run every 30 minutes. Platform 1 is for services toward the city. Validate your ticket before boarding at the orange machines on the platform. Trains are modern and have luggage space near the doors.

Step 4

Alight at Wien Mitte/Landstraße

This is the main interchange station in the 3rd district, served by U3 and U4 metro lines. From here you can reach virtually anywhere in central Vienna within 10–15 minutes on the U-Bahn.

Step 5

Continue to Your Hotel

Your €4.20 ticket is valid for onward travel. Jump on the U3 (red line) toward Ottakring for Mariahilfer Strasse, or the U4 (green line) toward Hütteldorf for the 1st district and Schönbrunn.

Pro Tips for Vienna Airport Transfers (2026)

Validate Before You Board

Inspectors are active on the S-Bahn. Unvalidated tickets — even paid ones — result in an on-the-spot €105 fine. Always stamp your ticket at the orange machines.

CAT City Check-In

If flying out, CAT allows baggage check-in and boarding pass printing at Wien Mitte station — saving time at the airport. Available for most airlines including Austrian, Lufthansa and Eurowings.

Night Services

The S7 stops around midnight. After hours, take the NightLine bus (N1) from the airport to Wien Schwedenplatz, or book a taxi in advance. Budget €40–€50 for a night cab.

Vienna City Card Worth It?

If staying 3+ days, the Vienna City Card (€17/24h, €25/48h, €29/72h) includes unlimited U-Bahn, trams and buses — but does NOT include the airport S7 surcharge. Buy a separate airport zone ticket.
