Beijing Capital International (PEK) connects to central Beijing via the dedicated Airport Express Line (机场快轨) — a driverless metro built for the 2008 Olympics. The single flat fare is ¥25 (about USD 3.50) regardless of destination. From T2 or T3 stations, trains reach Sanyuanqiao in 20 minutes and Dongzhimen (northern CBD terminal) in 25 minutes. Both stops connect to the wider Beijing subway (Line 10 at Sanyuanqiao, Line 2 + 13 at Dongzhimen), putting the entire city within 45-60 minutes of the airport. Trains run every 10 minutes from 06:00 to 23:10 in both directions. Buy tickets at the entrance vending machines (bilingual English + card + WeChat Pay + cash accepted) or use a Beijing Municipal Transportation Card. The Airport Express is significantly cheaper than taxis (~¥100-130) and immune to Beijing's peak-hour traffic — the winning option for solo/couple travellers with hand luggage. Note: PEK is being partially replaced by Daxing (PKX) for southern-China routes; check your ticket for airport code before choosing this guide.

FAQ

How much is the Beijing Airport Express metro?+

¥25 flat fare (about USD 3.50) regardless of station — Sanyuanqiao, Dongzhimen, or intermediate. This is the same fare in both directions. Buy from vending machines at T2/T3 stations (English available) or tap in with a Beijing Yikatong card / WeChat Pay / Alipay QR. Kids under 1.2m are free.

Airport Express vs taxi from Beijing airport?+

Take the Airport Express if: you have hand luggage only, you're heading to central/eastern Beijing, or Beijing traffic is at peak (7-9 AM, 5-8 PM). Take a taxi if: you have 3+ suitcases, you're heading to a hotel not near Sanyuanqiao or Dongzhimen, or you're travelling with kids. Taxi is ¥100-130 vs ¥25 for the Express — the Express wins for solo/couple travellers 80% of the time.

Does the Beijing Airport Express run at night?+

Trains run 06:00 to 23:10 outbound (airport → city) and 05:35 to 22:50 inbound (city → airport). After 23:10, your options are: taxi (¥100-130), DiDi, or Airport Bus Line 3/4 which runs 24/7 for most routes. For late-night arrivals, pre-book a Trip.com airport transfer — driver waits regardless of flight delay.

PEK Terminal 2 vs Terminal 3 metro station?+

Both T2 and T3 have their own Airport Express station. Trains alternate between T2 and T3 with a short 3-min interchange between them. Check your terminal before boarding — you can't board at T2 and get off at T3 without a fare adjustment (this only matters if you've arrived wrong-terminal and need to switch, which is rare). Signage in arrivals halls is bilingual and clear.
