Renfe R2 Nord is Barcelona airport's **commuter train** option — €4.60 to Passeig de Gràcia or Barcelona Sants in 25 minutes, T2-only. The R2 station sits directly below T2; from T1 (most international arrivals) you must take a free shuttle bus to T2 first, adding 15-25 minutes. For T2 passengers heading to a Sants-area hotel or onward AVE high-speed rail connection, R2 is the fastest + cheapest option. For T1 passengers, the L9 Metro is more practical. Some passengers combine — take R2 to Sants, transfer to AVE for Madrid/Valencia/Sevilla.

FAQ

Why doesn't R2 Nord serve T1?+

When Barcelona expanded T1 in 2009 (for Olympic and World Cup demand), the existing Renfe R2 station was at T2 (then the main terminal). Adding a rail extension to T1 was deemed unnecessary because the L9 Metro already covered both terminals. T1 passengers must take the free shuttle bus to T2 (every 5-10 min, ~10 min ride) to access R2.

Is R2 Nord cheaper than Aerobús?+

Yes — €4.60 vs €7.25. R2 also runs faster (25 min vs 35 min to central Barcelona). The catch: only from T2. For T1 arrivals + Plaça Catalunya destination, the Aerobús (direct) often wins on total time due to T1-T2 shuttle overhead.

Can I use T-Casual on R2 Nord?+

No — R2 Nord is operated by Renfe, not TMB (Barcelona's metro/bus operator). T-Casual covers TMB only. R2 tickets must be bought separately at the airport station vending machine or via the Renfe app. Single ride €4.60. Renfe also offers a T-Mobilitat integrated pass for €40-60 covering multi-day Renfe + TMB.

Can R2 reach Girona?+

No — R2 only goes from the airport to central Barcelona. For Girona (Costa Brava + Girona Airport), take R2 to Barcelona Sants, then transfer to AVE or Renfe MD long-distance train (~75 min to Girona). For direct Girona Airport access, that's a different airport entirely (GRO, used by Ryanair).
