London Gatwick has three direct rail options. **Gatwick Express** is the dedicated non-stop service — £19.80 single, 30 minutes Victoria, every 15 minutes. **Thameslink** is the local-fare alternative — £14.80, 30-50 minutes to London Bridge / Blackfriars / Farringdon / St Pancras (connects to Eurostar). **Southern** trains stop at East Croydon (12 min) + Clapham Junction (33 min) + Victoria (39 min) — £12.40 single, slightly cheaper than Gatwick Express. The right choice depends on your destination: Victoria-area hotels → Gatwick Express; King's Cross / Eurostar / St Pancras → Thameslink; West London via Clapham Junction → Southern. Trains run from both South Terminal (main) and North Terminal — North Terminal Express was discontinued so North Terminal users should take the free 90-second inter-terminal shuttle to South Terminal station.

FAQ

Gatwick Express vs Thameslink — which is better?+

Gatwick Express is faster + simpler (non-stop, 30 min) but more expensive (£19.80 vs £14.80). Thameslink wins if you're going to King's Cross / Eurostar / Blackfriars / Farringdon — those are direct stops. Gatwick Express only goes to Victoria, so for any other destination you'd transfer. Tip: Thameslink trains can take 30 min if you catch the right semi-fast service (twice an hour) — almost as fast as Gatwick Express for £5 less.

Where is the Gatwick train station?+

At South Terminal — directly under the arrivals concourse, accessible by escalator. If you arrive at North Terminal, take the free inter-terminal shuttle (90 seconds, every 5 min) to South Terminal first. North Terminal previously had its own train station but this was closed.

Is the Gatwick Express worth £5 more than Thameslink?+

Only if you're heading specifically to Victoria + value the non-stop journey. The trains are similar comfort, both reserved seats not required. For all other destinations the £5 saving on Thameslink (£14.80) is significant. Most travellers find Thameslink as good or better.

Late-night Gatwick train?+

Gatwick Express runs roughly 05:00 to 00:30. Thameslink runs roughly 04:30 to 01:00 + has occasional through-the-night services Friday/Saturday. After that: National Express coach (£10-£15, 60-90 min) or taxi (£100-£140). For overnight arrivals (01:00-05:00) the coach is usually the best option.
