Sydney Airport — Airport Link to Central
Sydney Kingsford Smith (SYD) to Sydney — Updated 2026
Sydney Airport Link is a direct rail service from both Sydney Airport terminals (T1 International + T2/T3 Domestic) to Central Station in 15 minutes for AUD 20-22 (2026 rates including the Airport Station Access Fee). Trains run every 10-15 minutes from 05:00 to 24:00 daily. The fare is unusually expensive for an airport train (compared to comparable cities) because it includes a "Station Access Fee" of about AUD 15 charged for using the Airport Line — this is why Sydney locals sometimes take a bus to Mascot station (avoids the fee, but slower). Both airport stations connect to the same T8 East Hills Line running into central Sydney, then onward to Wynyard, Circular Quay, and North Sydney via the harbour bridge. You need an Opal card, or you can tap a contactless Visa/Mastercard/AmEx directly at the gates. The airport train is dramatically faster than taxi/Uber in weekday rush hour when the Eastern Distributor to central can crawl.

FAQ
Why is Sydney Airport train so expensive?+
The AUD 22 fare includes a "Station Access Fee" of about AUD 15 that goes to the private airport station operator (not the government transit system). This is why 15-minute airport-to-Central costs more than most 2-hour Sydney bus + train combos. Alternative: walk 1 km from the airport terminals to Mascot station and pay AUD 4-6 for the same train service (no Access Fee).
Can I use contactless card at Sydney Airport Link?+
Yes — tap any Visa, Mastercard, or American Express contactless card (or Apple/Google Pay) directly at the Opal gates. Fare is automatically charged the same as an Opal card. No need to buy Opal if you're only staying a few days.
Airport Link hours + last train?+
05:00 to 24:00 daily. Last train from Airport (both terminals) at approximately 00:15 to Central. First train around 04:50. Between 00:15 and 04:50 there's no train — use NightRide bus N10 (Central to Airport, hourly overnight), Uber, or taxi.
Sydney Airport to Opera House by train?+
Airport Link to Central (15 min, AUD 22 peak), transfer to T8 line continuation to Circular Quay (7 min, no extra Opal charge). Total 22 min, AUD 22. Or continue to Wynyard + walk 8 min to Circular Quay. Fast + reliable — dramatically better than road traffic through the CBD.
