Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND) sits just 14 km from central Tokyo — much closer than Narita. Two competing train lines run from the airport: the Tokyo Monorail (¥520, 18 min to Hamamatsucho) and the Keikyu Airport Line (¥300, 14 min to Shinagawa). For most travellers, Keikyu is faster, cheaper, AND lets you ride through to Asakusa without changing trains via the Toei Asakusa Line. From Shinagawa, transfer to JR Yamanote Line for Shibuya, Shinjuku, or shinkansen to Kyoto.

FAQ

Which train should I take from Haneda — Monorail or Keikyu?+

Keikyu Airport Line is usually better. It is faster (14 min vs 18 min) and cheaper (¥300 vs ¥520). The trick is destination: Keikyu reaches Shinagawa, which gives you JR Yamanote Line + shinkansen access. Monorail goes to Hamamatsucho, which gives you JR Yamanote + Toei Asakusa Line. Both work for central Tokyo via Yamanote. For Asakusa/Skytree, take Keikyu — it through-runs onto the Toei Asakusa Line, dropping you in Asakusa direct in 30 min without changing trains. For shinkansen to Kyoto/Osaka, take Keikyu to Shinagawa.

Where are the Haneda train stations inside the airport?+

Haneda Airport has 3 terminals — T1 (ANA domestic), T2 (JAL + ANA domestic), and T3 (international). All have train stations directly below them on basement level 1 or 2. From Arrivals, follow purple Tokyo Monorail signs OR red/blue Keikyu signs to the basement. Both stations are typically a 5-minute walk from gates. The two train lines are at the same level but separate platforms — make sure you board the right one.

Is the JR Pass useful at Haneda?+

Less so than at Narita. Neither the Tokyo Monorail nor the Keikyu Airport Line is covered by the JR Pass. You need to pay separately for them (or use Suica/PASMO). The JR Pass becomes useful once you reach a JR station (Hamamatsucho via Monorail, Shinagawa via Keikyu) — from there, transfer onto Yamanote Line + shinkansen for free with the pass. The savings only matter if you have a JR Pass for multi-city Japan travel.

How do I get to Shinjuku or Shibuya from Haneda?+

Take Keikyu Airport Line to Shinagawa (14 min, ¥300), then JR Yamanote Line. Shinagawa → Shibuya is 11 min (¥210, 4 stops). Shinagawa → Shinjuku is 19 min (¥240, 6 stops). Total Haneda → Shinjuku: ~45 min, ¥540. Alternative: Limousine Bus direct from Haneda Arrivals to Shinjuku-area hotels (¥1,400, 40–60 min). Bus is better with heavy luggage; train is faster and cheaper.

How do I transfer between Haneda (HND) and Narita (NRT)?+

Two main routes. (1) Direct Limousine Bus from Haneda Arrivals to Narita Airport — ¥3,300, 75–90 min depending on traffic, runs every 30 min from 05:30 to 22:00. (2) Train: Keikyu Airport Line to Shinagawa (14 min) → JR Narita Express to Narita (60 min, ¥3,070). Total ¥3,370 + 90 min. For tight connections, allow 3+ hours airport-to-airport. (3) Direct Keikyu + Keisei through-service exists but is slow (90+ min) and not significantly cheaper.

What time does Haneda close?+

Unlike Narita, Haneda is open 24/7 for international flights. However, train services have nightly cutoffs: Tokyo Monorail last train ~23:50, Keikyu last train ~00:11. Limousine Bus runs until ~01:00. After that, only taxis are available (¥6,000–9,000 to central Tokyo). For very early or very late flights, Haneda Airport hotels include Royal Park Hotel Tokyo Haneda (T3 connected), Villa Fontaine Tokyo Haneda (T1 connected). Both let you sleep until the trains restart at 05:00.
