FAQ

Which Tokyo Narita train should I take?+

Depends on destination + budget. (1) Going to Tokyo Station, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Ikebukuro: take Narita Express (N’EX) — ¥3,070 direct, no transfers, dedicated luggage space. Free with JR Pass. (2) Going to Ueno, Asakusa, eastern Tokyo: take Keisei Skyliner — ¥2,580 to Ueno in 41 min, faster than N’EX. (3) Budget travellers: Keisei Access Express ¥1,440 to Asakusa or Oshiage in 75 min — slower but half the price. (4) Carrying multiple bags or travelling overnight: Tokyo Shuttle bus ¥1,300 direct to hotel area.

Where do I catch the trains at Narita Airport?+

Both N’EX and Keisei trains share the same basement station at Narita Airport. From Terminal 1: take the escalator down two levels (B2 / B3) — follow JR (orange) and Keisei (red) signs. From Terminal 2/3: same setup, walk to the Airport Terminal 2 Station. Walk from Arrivals to platform is 5–10 minutes. JR (N’EX) and Keisei (Skyliner) ticket counters are on the upper concourse — buy tickets before going down. Both companies sell tickets via vending machines that accept foreign cards.

Is the JR Pass worth it just for the N’EX?+

Not on its own. A round-trip N’EX is ¥6,140 vs the 7-day JR Pass at ¥50,000. The JR Pass only pays off if you are taking shinkansen (bullet trains) to Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima, or other intercity routes. For Tokyo-only trips, buy a one-way N’EX ticket plus a Tokyo Subway Pass (¥800/24h, ¥1,200/48h, ¥1,500/72h). For multi-city Japan trips with Kyoto + Osaka, the JR Pass becomes worth it — book before arriving as it cannot be bought in Japan.

How do I use a Suica or PASMO card on the trains?+

Suica + PASMO IC cards work on all Narita trains EXCEPT the reserved-seat N’EX and Skyliner. You need a paper ticket for N’EX (¥3,070) or Skyliner (¥2,580) — buy at the airport JR or Keisei counter. IC cards DO work on the Keisei Access Express (¥1,440), Keisei Limited Express (¥1,050), and any regular JR line. Buy a Suica/PASMO at the airport for ¥500 deposit (refundable) — it works on all Tokyo trains, buses, vending machines, and convenience stores.

How do I get to Haneda Airport (HND) from Narita?+

NRT and HND are 70 km apart with no direct connection. Best option: Limousine Bus from Narita Arrivals direct to Haneda — ¥3,300, 75–90 min, runs every 30 min from 06:30 to 22:00. Alternative: train — N’EX to Shinagawa (¥3,070), then Keikyu Airport Line to HND (¥300, 15 min). Total ¥3,370 + 90 min. For connecting flights, allow 3+ hours between NRT arrival and HND departure. Domestic flights from HND to other Japanese cities are often faster than shinkansen for trips over 1,000 km.

What about late-night arrivals at Narita?+

Narita Airport effectively closes after 22:00. The last N’EX departs around 21:44, last Skyliner around 23:00. After that, options are limited: (1) Tokyo Shuttle night bus ¥3,300 (only runs after midnight via reservation). (2) Taxi to central Tokyo ¥22,000–28,000. (3) Stay at an airport hotel — Nine Hours Narita (capsule, ¥4,500) is the cheapest. If arriving past 22:30, plan ahead — Narita is 70 km from the city and ground transport gets expensive fast.
