Best Things To Do: Cebu, Philippines

March 22, 2026AirConnect Editors

Cebu is one of those rare destinations that somehow still feels like a secret, even though travellers in the know have been falling in love with it for years. From whale sharks and waterfalls to centuries-old churches and some of the freshest lechon you'll ever taste, this central Philippine island packs an extraordinary amount into a relatively compact space. Whether you're a first-timer or a returning visitor, here's everything you need to make the most of your time in Cebu.

Overview

Cebu is the second most significant urban centre in the Philippines and serves as the gateway to the Visayas region. Cebu City, the bustling capital, sits on the eastern coast of Cebu Island and is surrounded by smaller islands, mountain towns, and coastal villages that are easy to reach by road or ferry. The climate is warm year-round, with the dry season running from roughly November to May β€” the sweet spot for outdoor adventures and island hopping. Beyond the weather, what draws people here is the sheer variety: urban culture, world-class diving, ancient history, and jaw-dropping natural scenery all within a few hours of each other.

Top 10 Activities

  • Swim with whale sharks in Oslob. Roughly three hours south of Cebu City, Oslob offers the chance to snorkel alongside the world's largest fish. Arrive early (before 7am) to beat the crowds. Entry and snorkelling fees are around $15 USD per person.
  • Chase Kawasan Falls. Located in Badian, this multi-tiered turquoise waterfall is one of the most beautiful in Southeast Asia. Many travellers combine it with a canyoneering experience for around $30–$40 USD through a local guide operator.
  • Explore Magellan's Cross and Basilica del Santo NiΓ±o. Right in the heart of Cebu City, these two landmarks sit side by side and mark where the Philippines first embraced Christianity in 1521. Entry is free and the surrounding Colon Street area is great for a wander.
  • Dive or snorkel around Moalboal. The Pescador Island Marine Sanctuary near Moalboal is famous for its sardine run β€” a swirling, hypnotic wall of millions of fish. Dive shops in town offer fun dives from around $25 USD.
  • Hop over to Bantayan Island. Take a bus to Hagnaya Port and catch a ferry to this laid-back island paradise known for powder-white beaches and exceptionally fresh seafood. Budget around $5–$8 USD each way for the ferry.
  • Visit Sirao Flower Garden. Up in the cooler hills of Busay, this colourful garden is often called the "Little Amsterdam of Cebu." It's a short jeepney or habal-habal (motorcycle taxi) ride from Cebu City and costs just a dollar or two to enter.
  • Eat your way through the Carbon Market. Cebu's oldest and largest public market is chaotic, vibrant, and completely worth it. Sample dried mangoes, fresh coconut, and local street food for next to nothing.
  • Ride the Heritage of Cebu Monument. This detailed sculptural installation in Parian (the old Chinatown district) tells the story of Cebu's history through stone figures. It's free to visit and one of the most photogenic spots in the city.
  • Take a sunset cruise. Several operators run evening cruises departing from Mactan Island. Prices start at around $20 USD and include drinks β€” a perfect way to end a busy day.
  • Try lechon at CNT or Rico's. Cebu lechon is considered the best in the Philippines. CNT Lechon in Carbon Market and Rico's Lechon near Guadalupe are local institutions. A generous serving costs around $3–$5 USD and it will ruin all other roast pork for you permanently.

Practical Tips

  • Getting around: Within Cebu City, use Grab (the regional Uber equivalent) for reliable, affordable rides. Jeepneys are cheap and fun but confusing for newcomers. For day trips, hiring a private van with a driver costs around $50–$80 USD and is well worth it for flexibility.
  • Currency: The Philippine Peso (PHP) is the local currency. ATMs are plentiful in the city; carry cash when heading to smaller towns or islands. $1 USD is roughly 56–58 PHP at the time of writing.
  • Safety: Cebu is generally safe for tourists. Standard precautions apply β€” keep your belongings secure in busy markets and always book excursions through reputable operators.
  • Best base: Stay in IT Park or Ayala Center in Cebu City for easy access to restaurants, transport, and nightlife. For beach proximity, Mactan Island is ideal.

Mactan–Cebu International Airport (IATA: CEB) is the second busiest airport in the Philippines and well connected internationally. Direct flights operate from Singapore, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Tokyo, Seoul, and several other Asian hubs. From Europe, North America, or Australia, most travellers connect through Manila (MNL) or a regional hub. Budget carriers including Cebu Pacific, AirAsia, and Philippine Airlines serve the route frequently, keeping domestic fares competitive β€” expect to pay $20–$60 USD for a Manila-Cebu flight depending on timing and how early you book.

Accommodation Options

  • Budget: The Greenhouse Hostel and Hop Inn Cebu IT Park offer clean, comfortable beds from around $12–$25 USD per night. Both are well located and popular with solo travellers.
