Cebu
Queen City of the South — whale sharks, Kawasan Falls + Spanish heritage
Cebu is the Philippines' second-biggest city + gateway to the Central Visayas. Historic Fort San Pedro + Magellan's Cross downtown, but the real attractions are the surrounding sites: Oslob whale sharks, Kawasan Falls canyoneering, Moalboal sardine run + Bantayan Island beaches.
Cebu highlights
Kawasan Falls canyoneering
Cliff-jumping + swimming down waterfall canyon from Kanlaob to Kawasan Falls. Half-day tour ~$30.
Oslob whale shark watching
Nearly-guaranteed sightings — ethics debated (fed to attract them). Depart 05:00 from Cebu.
Moalboal sardine run
Massive sardine schools in shallow water. Free from Panagsama Beach.
Bantayan Island
Powder-white beaches — 4h north by bus + ferry. Less touristy than Boracay.
Fort San Pedro + Magellan's Cross
Cebu's Spanish colonial heart — free entry to Magellan's Cross, small fee to Fort San Pedro.
Sinulog Festival
Third Sunday of January — the country's biggest street parade + festival. Book hotel 6+ months ahead.
Lechon Cebu
The world's best roast pig. Zubuchon + House of Lechon are the reputable spots.
