Bangkok to Vientiane is the overland Thai-Lao border crossing via Nong Khai + the Friendship Bridge (1st Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge, Nong Khai-Vientiane). Two options: (1) Overnight sleeper bus direct from Mo Chit terminal 20:00-21:00 for 06:00 arrival Nong Khai, cross border, minibus to central Vientiane. (2) Overnight sleeper train (State Railway of Thailand + connecting shuttle) — the more comfortable option. Since 2021, the China-Laos railway extension has connected Vientiane to Chinese networks, opening broader onward travel.

This bypasses the Nong Khai border scam where officials charge a $2 "overtime fee" on top of the $30-50 official fee. Apply 5-7 days ahead. Also: NEVER accept "help" from unofficial agents at Nong Khai/Thanaleng border — they insert themselves + demand $10-20.

How does the Friendship Bridge crossing work?
Bus/train drops you at Nong Khai station or border. Take official border shuttle bus (฿20) across the 1.2 km bridge — this is mandatory, you can't walk. Immigration processing at Thai exit (10 min) + Lao entry (15-45 min). Then minibus/tuk-tuk to Vientiane.
From Vientiane onward to Luang Prabang?
China-Laos railway (opened 2021): Vientiane to Luang Prabang in 2 hours for LAK 250,000-350,000 ($12-17). Reserved seat required, book at Vientiane Station 24-48h ahead in high season. Bus alternative: 9-10h via Route 13 (mountainous). Train is dramatically better.
