Chiang Mai to Pai is the classic backpacker minibus ride — 3-4 hours through 762 curves over the Mae Malai mountain pass. Aya Service (green minibuses) and Prempracha are the main operators — 8-9x daily each. If you get motion sick: TAKE DRAMAMINE, sit in the front, and eat light before departure. Buses depart from Chiang Mai Arcade Bus Terminal (Terminal 2). Alternative: rent a scooter + drive it yourself (very common — some rental shops help). Warning: the mountain road has claimed many scooter travellers — only drive if you have real motorbike experience.
The road has 762 curves — SEVERE motion sickness common. Take Dramamine 30 min before departure. Sit in the front row. Some minibuses are old + poorly maintained — Aya Service has the newest fleet.

Legendary. 762 curves over the Mae Hong Son loop mountain pass. Even people who never get motion sick have thrown up on this route. Take Dramamine 30 min before departure, sit in the front row, keep the window open, and eat light beforehand. Overnight departures are worse (bumpy in the dark).
Scooter is romantic + scenic but has genuine safety concerns — steep mountain descents, gravel patches, and a bad accident history for inexperienced riders. Rent from Aya Service and they'll drive your bags up separately (they run both the bus + a scooter transfer). Real motorbike experience essential.
Pai Bus Terminal — 5 min walk to Walking Street + guesthouses. The town is tiny (walkable in 15 min end-to-end). Songthaews to accommodation ฿50-100 if you're staying at a resort outside town.
Book Chiang Mai → Pai on arrival day (12go or at terminal). Book Pai → Chiang Mai return at Aya Service office on Walking Street 24h before departure — buses fill in high season (Nov-Feb + Songkran).
