Vientiane to Luang Prabang is TRANSFORMED by the China-Laos Railway (opened December 2021) — high-speed train covers 400km in 2h for LAK 250,000-350,000 ($12-17). Modern Chinese-built high-speed train — dramatically better than the 9-10h mountain bus. Old bus route via Route 13 is still available but only worth it if trains sold out or you want the scenic experience. Book train at Vientiane Station 24-48h ahead in high season (Nov-Feb) — sells out.
Book the China-Laos Railway train ONLY at Vientiane Station (Khamsavath) or via 12go — not through hotel touts who overcharge 30-50%. Passport required at booking + at boarding. In peak season (Nov-Feb), book 3-7 days ahead.

TRAIN — no contest. 2h vs 9-10h. Cost similar ($12-17 train vs $10-15 bus). Comfort dramatically better. Only take bus if trains completely sold out.
Book at Vientiane Station (Khamsavath) 24-48h ahead OR via 12go online. Passport required at booking + boarding. Print or screenshot ticket. Peak season (Nov-Feb + Chinese New Year): book 3-7 days ahead.
Luang Prabang Railway Station — 10 km northeast of Old Town (peninsula between Mekong + Nam Khan rivers). Airport-style tuk-tuk transfer service LAK 30-50k per person, or private tuk-tuk LAK 100-150k for 4-person car.
Technically possible with 2h train each way — 07:30 dep VTE, arrive LP 09:30, back on 17:30 train arriving 19:30. But: Luang Prabang deserves at least 2 nights for the temples, night market, Kuang Si waterfalls, and Mount Phousi sunset.
