Which airport serves Trastevere, Rome?
Trastevere is served by Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO), approximately 35–45 minutes by Leonardo Express train to Roma Termini (EUR 14), then tram 8 direct to Trastevere (20 min). Ciampino Airport (CIA) is used by Ryanair and is 40 min by bus (EUR 6) to Termini.
What is Trastevere known for?
Trastevere (meaning "across the Tiber") is Rome's most charming neighbourhood — cobblestone alleys, ivy-clad medieval buildings, authentic trattorias, and a vibrant piazza scene. It retains the feel of old Rome more than anywhere else in the city and is famous for its nightlife and the stunning 12th-century Santa Maria in Trastevere basilica.
Is Trastevere good for food?
Yes — Trastevere has some of Rome's best traditional trattorias. Look for cacio e pepe, carbonara, coda alla vaccinara, and supplì (fried rice balls). Avoid the tourist traps on the main piazza — the best places are down side streets. Mercato di Porta Portese (Sunday flea market) has excellent street food.
When is the best time to visit Rome and Trastevere?
April to June and September to October are ideal — warm, manageable crowds, all sights open. July and August are very hot (35°C+) but Trastevere stays lively at night with locals. December has fewer tourists and festive markets. Avoid Easter weekend — the entire city is packed.
