ETIAS for Irish Citizens
Ireland is in the EU but NOT in Schengen — so from late 2026, Irish passport holders need an ETIAS authorisation to visit France, Spain, Italy, Germany and 26 other Schengen countries. €7, valid 3 years, online.
Quick Facts
Why Irish citizens specifically need this
Ireland chose not to join the Schengen Area in 1999 — primarily to preserve the Common Travel Area with the UK. That choice means Irish passport holders are treated like third-country nationals when entering Schengen countries. EU citizenship still grants the right to live, work and study in any EU country without ETIAS — but ETIAS is required for short visits to Schengen states. ETIAS is not a visa. It is a pre-screening, similar in spirit to the US ESTA.
How to apply — step by step
travel-europe.europa.eu — beware of lookalike sites charging €40-€90 for the same service. There is no expedited fee, no premium processing, no "agency" advantage.
You'll need to type the document number, issue date, expiry date, and country of issue exactly as printed. Take a photo first.
You enter the FIRST Schengen country you'll cross the border into. If you fly Dublin → Paris CDG → Rome, the answer is France. If you fly Dublin → London → Paris, it's still France (UK is outside Schengen).
Even minor past offences should be declared. A lie that's caught is a hard refusal; a disclosed minor matter is almost always waved through.
Debit or credit card. The system charges immediately — there are no refunds even if your application is denied.
Usually 5-15 minutes. Up to 96 hours if your file is flagged for manual review. Up to 30 days if additional documents are requested. Apply 4 weeks before travel to be safe.
The ETIAS is electronically linked to your passport. Airlines and border guards check the link at the gate / kiosk. There is no document to carry, but save the confirmation email.
ETIAS FAQ
Why do Irish citizens need ETIAS if Ireland is in the EU?+
Ireland is a member of the European Union, but it is NOT a member of the Schengen Area. Ireland (along with Cyprus) opted out of Schengen to preserve the Common Travel Area with the UK. ETIAS applies to travel into the Schengen Area, not the EU as a legal entity — so Irish passport holders are treated similarly to UK, US and Australian travellers when entering Schengen countries. This does NOT affect freedom-of-movement rights as an EU citizen for long-term residence or work — those remain.
When does ETIAS become mandatory for Irish citizens?+
ETIAS launches in late 2026 (the EU has not committed to a firm date as of mid-2026). There will be a six-month transitional period where travel is permitted without ETIAS while the system stabilises, followed by a further "grace period" where first-time travellers without ETIAS will be admitted on a one-time exception basis. After that, no ETIAS = no boarding. Airlines will be required to check ETIAS status at check-in.
How much does ETIAS cost?+
ETIAS costs €7 per application. It is free for applicants under 18 or over 70 years old. Family members of EU citizens (non-EU passport holders married to an EU national) are also exempt. Payment is online by debit or credit card.
How long is ETIAS valid?+
Three years from the date of approval — or until the passport it is linked to expires, whichever comes first. If you renew your passport, you need a fresh ETIAS application. There is no "transfer" between passports.
Do Irish citizens need ETIAS to visit the UK?+
No. The Common Travel Area between Ireland and the UK gives Irish citizens unlimited rights to enter, live, work and access services in the UK — no visa, no ETA, no time limit. ETIAS only applies to Schengen Area entry. The UK has its own scheme, ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation), but Irish citizens are exempt under the CTA.
Which countries require ETIAS?+
The 30 Schengen Area countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland — plus the European microstates (Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, Vatican). Cyprus is not in Schengen so ETIAS does not apply.
Can my ETIAS be denied?+
Yes, although the refusal rate is expected to be very low (under 5% in the early years, similar to ESTA). The main grounds for refusal: a SIS (Schengen Information System) alert against the applicant, a previous over-stay or deportation, a serious criminal conviction in the past 10 years, or false information on the application. If refused, you can appeal in the Schengen country of first intended entry — but the practical alternative is to apply for a full Schengen visa at the embassy of the country you plan to enter first.
