Paris has one of the highest pickpocket rates in Europe. Métro Line 1 (Louvre-Champs-Élysées) + Line 4 + RER B (airport line) are the primary hotspots. Organized rings work these lines daily; average theft is a phone or wallet within 30-90 seconds.

Common techniques used in Paris
Petition scam
Young women approach with clipboard "for the deaf" or "for orphans" — signing distracts you while accomplice pickpockets.
Gold ring drop
Person "finds" a gold ring, gives it to you, then demands money — accomplice lifts wallet during interaction.
Metro sandwich
Two people compress you between them as train doors close; a third lifts wallet in the confusion.
Ticket-machine helper
Stranger "helps" you use the metro ticket machine — memorises your PIN or lifts wallet.
Prevention
- 1Money belt under clothes for card + passport + main cash.
- 2Cross-body bag on your FRONT, hand on the zipper.
- 3Nothing in back pockets. Phone in an inside pocket.
- 4Avoid Metro Line 1 in peak — walk down Rue de Rivoli or take Bus 72 instead (same route, half the risk).
- 5On RER B from airport: keep bag between your feet, hand on strap, don't sleep.
Recommended anti-theft gear

- •RFID-blocking wallet (against contactless card skimming)
- •Phone tether/lanyard for street photos
If it happens
- 1.File "récépissé" (police report) at nearest commissariat — required for insurance + card replacement.
- 2.Cancel all bank cards immediately (call issuers before leaving station).
- 3.Passport stolen: contact your embassy immediately — emergency travel document available same-day for US/UK/AU/CA.
- 4.Phone stolen: use Find My iPhone / Find My Device from another phone to lock it remotely.
