Paris scams are famously sophisticated + tourist-industrial — organised gangs work Eiffel Tower + Metro Line 1 + Champs-Élysées every day. The "ring on the ground", "petition to sign", and "friendship bracelet" scams are archetypal. Most cost EUR 20-100 in cash; pickpocket combos can hit thousands.
"Is this your ring?" gold ring drop
Person picks up a ring off the ground in front of you, asks if it's yours.
The ring is worthless brass. They offer it to you as a "gift", then demand money for their "good deed". Persistent + follows you.
- ✓Ignore anyone asking about a "found" ring — walk away without engaging.

Friendship bracelet at Sacré-Cœur
Men at the Sacré-Cœur steps grab your wrist and start tying a bracelet.
Once tied on, they demand EUR 20-40 for it. Aggressive if refused. Sometimes accomplices distract while you're trapped.
- ✓Keep hands in pockets. Refuse EYE CONTACT — they read hesitation as opportunity.
- ✓If approached, immediately loud "NO" + walk away.
- →If bracelet is tied on, pull it off + refuse to pay. They rarely escalate physically.

Fake charity petition
Young women (often Eastern European) ask you to sign a petition "for the deaf" or "for orphans".
While you're distracted signing, an accomplice pickpockets. If no accomplice, they demand a "donation" after signing.
- ✓Ignore all petitions in tourist areas. Real charities don't harass tourists like this.
- ✓Keep valuables in front zipped pockets.

- →Report theft to police (17) — needed for insurance.
Metro Line 1 pickpocket teams
Crowded Metro Line 1 (Louvre + Champs-Élysées + Trocadéro tourist route).
Group boards together — one blocks, one lifts, one takes handoff at next station. Also works on Line 4 + RER B (airport line).
- ✓Money belt inside clothes for card + passport + main cash.
- ✓Cross-body bag on front, hand on zipper.
- ✓Phone in inside pocket during commute.
- ✓Avoid using phones on the platform.
- →File complaint at nearest commissariat. Get "récépissé" (report) for insurance.
