Rome Tourist Scams

Italy

Rome's scams centre on Vatican + Colosseum + Spanish Steps + Termini station. Pickpocket density on Bus 64 (Termini to Vatican) is legendary. Gladiator photo scams, "gift" bracelet, and rose-in-hand extortion are the top three.

High overall risk

Gladiator photo demand

Very common — every tourist should know this
Moderate financial riskCost EUR 20-100
Trigger

Costumed "gladiator" near Colosseum invites you to take a photo.

How it works

After photo, demands EUR 20-100 per person. Refusing can turn aggressive. Real Colosseum grounds ban this but the exterior + Metro area B are unregulated.

How to avoid
  • Don't take photos with costumed characters unless you've agreed EUR amount BEFORE clicking.
If it happens to you
  • Pay smallest amount to end (EUR 5-10). Report to Polizia Locale: +39 06 4686.

Very common — every tourist should know this
Serious financial riskCost EUR 100-2000

Crowded Bus 64 morning/afternoon tourist rush.

How it works

Named "the pickpocket express" by locals. Multi-person teams — front pocket, backpack, phone. Also happens on Bus 40 + Metro Line A stops.

Where it clusters
Bus 64Bus 40Metro A Termini + Spagna + Ottaviano
How to avoid
  • Money belt inside clothes. Backpack on front. Nothing in back pockets.
  • Alternative: walk from Termini to Vatican (45 min) or Metro Line A (Ottaviano) — safer.
If it happens to you
  • Report at Polizia commissariat + get "denuncia" for insurance.

Restaurant menu swap (tourist menu)

Common — likely to encounter
Moderate financial riskCost EUR 30-100
Trigger

Restaurant near Colosseum/Vatican brings you a menu without prices, then presents inflated bill.

How it works

Real practice: cover charges of EUR 5-10/person + tourist markup of 3-5x. Menu without prices = red flag.

How to avoid
  • ALWAYS ask for menu with prices before ordering.
  • Verify cover charge ("coperto") before sitting.
  • Avoid restaurants inside 500m of major sights — Google Maps + reviews first.
If it happens to you
  • Pay + file complaint with Guardia di Finanza (tax police) 117 — they investigate tourist-menu abuse.
