How to Take a Prepaid Taxi from Mumbai Airport

The prepaid taxi is the safest and most transparent option for first-time visitors to Mumbai. Follow these 5 steps for a smooth ride.

1

Exit arrivals and follow 'Prepaid Taxi' signs

After collecting baggage and clearing customs at Terminal 2 (international), follow the green 'Prepaid Taxi' signs. The counter is before the main exit doors, on the left-hand side of the arrivals hall.

2

Tell the counter agent your destination

Give the agent your full destination address or area. Fares are set by zone — government-regulated and displayed on a large board. No negotiation is needed or expected.

3

Pay the fare upfront and collect your receipt

Pay in cash (INR) at the counter. UPI payments (Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm) are increasingly accepted. You'll receive a numbered receipt — keep it safe. The fare includes all tolls.

4

Find your assigned taxi outside

Head to the prepaid taxi bay directly outside the arrivals exit. A marshal will match your receipt number to a waiting taxi. AC and non-AC options are available — specify your preference at the counter.

5

Hand the receipt to your driver on arrival

Give the driver your receipt at your destination — not before. The receipt is proof of payment. You are not obligated to tip, but ₹50–₹100 is appreciated for good service.

Insider Tips to Avoid Overpaying

Avoid touts outside arrivals

Unlicensed drivers may approach you offering 'cheap' fares. Always use the official prepaid counter or book via app before leaving the terminal.

Travel off-peak when possible

Mumbai traffic is brutal 7–10 AM and 5–9 PM. A 40-minute ride can take 90+ minutes. If your flight lands at peak hours, consider grabbing a coffee before heading out.

Have small INR notes ready

Drivers often claim not to have change. Carry ₹500 and ₹100 notes for smooth payment. Currency exchange desks are available in the arrivals hall at reasonable rates.

Uber/Ola pickup zones are specific

App cabs have dedicated pickup bays — check the app for the exact bay number (P1, P2 etc.) as they differ by terminal. Do not meet your driver at an unofficial spot.
