How to Take Bus 187 from CMB Airport (Step-by-Step)

The public bus is the most budget-friendly option. Follow these steps for a smooth ride.

Step 1

Exit the arrivals hall

After collecting your baggage and clearing customs, walk through the arrivals gate. Do not accept offers from unofficial taxi touts — keep walking towards the exit.

Step 2

Locate the public bus stop

Turn right as you exit the terminal building. Walk approximately 200 metres along the main road outside the airport. The public bus stop is marked with a blue signboard. Look for buses with the number 187.

Step 3

Board bus 187 towards Colombo Fort

Bus 187 runs from Katunayake (the airport area) directly to Colombo Fort railway station. Buses run roughly every 15–30 minutes between 05:30 and 22:00. There is no advance booking — simply board and pay the conductor.

Step 4

Pay the conductor on board

The fare is between LKR 100 and LKR 150 depending on your stop. Pay in cash (Sri Lankan Rupees). The conductor will issue a small paper ticket. Keep it until you disembark.

Step 5

Ride to Colombo Fort (60–90 min)

The journey takes 60 to 90 minutes depending on traffic. The bus travels via the Colombo–Katunayake Expressway access roads and passes through several suburbs. Colombo Fort is the final major stop and connects to trains and tuk-tuks citywide.

Step 6

Onward travel from Colombo Fort

From Colombo Fort station you can take a train, tuk-tuk, or PickMe ride to your final destination. The fort area is the transport hub of the city.

Practical Tips for 2026

  • Exchange a small amount of LKR before boarding — drivers do not accept USD.
  • Bus 187 does not run after approximately 22:00. Plan accordingly.
  • Download the PickMe app before landing as a backup option.
  • Sri Lanka has been seeing rising visitor numbers in 2026 — buses can be very crowded on public holidays.
  • There is no luggage storage at the bus stop. Travel light or use the SLTB Express.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.Does the bus from Colombo Airport run 24 hours?

No. Public bus 187 and the SLTB Airport Express do not run overnight. Standard service operates roughly from 05:30 to 22:00. For late-night or early-morning arrivals, a taxi or PickMe app ride is your best option. Expect to pay LKR 2,500–4,500 for a metered taxi to the city centre.

Q.Can I take a large suitcase on the bus?

You can, but it is not very comfortable. Bus 187 is a standard public bus with no dedicated luggage space. During peak hours it can be very crowded. If you have more than one large bag, the SLTB Airport Express is a better choice as it has slightly more room, or consider a PickMe or private transfer.

Q.Is the Colombo Airport bus safe for solo travellers?

Yes. The public bus and SLTB Express are widely used by both locals and tourists. Keep your bags in front of you and be aware of your surroundings as on any public transport. The bus stop is well-lit and staff are present. Solo female travellers report no particular issues on daytime services.
