SNCB train from BRU — how does it work?+
SNCB trains run from BRU directly to Brussels Central in 17 min, every 10-15 min, €11.90 (includes the €5.80 Diabolo airport surcharge — not an extra cost at the gate). The train continues to Brussels-Midi (key for Eurostar/Thalys onward) + Brussels-Nord. For most centre hotels: train + 5-15 min walk. For EU quarter: bus 12 may be more direct.
BRU to Eurostar Brussels-Midi transfer?+
Brussels-Midi is the international rail hub for Eurostar (London), Thalys/Eurostar (Paris/Amsterdam), and ICE (Frankfurt). From BRU, SNCB train direct to Midi is 25 min for €11.90. Pre-booked transfer is 25-40 min. For Eurostar with checked luggage + 30-min pre-departure check-in: pre-book transfer with 90-min buffer before train departure.
EU Quarter or Grand Place — which transfer is shorter?+
EU Quarter (Schuman, Berlaymont, European Parliament) is actually closer to BRU (15-25 min, €35-50) than the historic Grand Place centre (20-30 min, €40-55). If you're visiting EU institutions, hotels in Schuman make logistical sense. For tourists: Grand Place area is preferable for walking.
Brussels traffic — when is it bad?+
Brussels has some of Europe's worst commuter traffic, especially during EU sitting weeks (typically 3 weeks per month, Sep-Jul). Worst times: Tue-Thu 07:30-09:30 and 16:30-19:00.
