Dublin Airport (DUB) is 10 km north of the city centre — 25-40 minutes by road, longer in M50 ring-road traffic. There's no direct rail link (a Metro Link is under construction with no firm completion date). The Airlink Express bus (€7-12 one-way) runs every 10-15 min to O'Connell Street + Grafton Street. Pre-booked transfers give door-to-door service and skip the airport-taxi queue (15-30 min at peak).

Booking tips for Dublin

  • → Dublin has no airport rail link — pre-book or use Airlink Express (€7-12) for centre
  • → M50 ring-road traffic 07:00-09:30 + 16:30-19:00 doubles transfer time — add buffer
  • → For Galway / Cork onward rail: pre-book to Heuston station, not the centre
  • → Dublin taxis accept card now (mandatory since 2024) — pre-booked drivers also do

Dublin airport transfer FAQ

Why no train from DUB?+

Dublin is one of the only major European capitals without an airport rail link. The "Metro Link" subway has been proposed for over 20 years with no firm completion date (current estimate is 2035). Until then: Airlink Express bus (€7-12, 30-45 min to O'Connell St) or pre-booked transfer / taxi (25-40 min door-to-door).

Airlink Express vs pre-booked transfer?+

Airlink Express (€7-12) runs every 10-15 min direct to O'Connell St + Grafton St + a few other central stops. Total 30-45 min to most centre hotels. Pre-booked transfer is 25-40 min door-to-door. For couples + heavy luggage + non-centre hotels: transfer. For solo + central hotels + budget: Airlink.

DUB taxi or Free Now?+

Dublin taxis are metered (typically €30-45 to centre + €2 airport pickup fee). Free Now (the rebranded Hailo app) hails licensed taxis at metered rates — same price as the rank. Pre-booked transfer adds name-sign meet-and-greet + fixed price + flight tracking. Choose based on whether you want predictability (transfer) or lowest price (Free Now app).

M50 traffic — how bad is it?+

The M50 is Dublin's orbital ring road and feeds DUB. At peak (07:00-09:30, 16:30-19:00) it adds 15-30 min to airport transfers. Sundays and late evenings: clear. Pre-booked transfers track flight arrivals — if you arrive at 18:00 the driver knows to budget extra time, but if you arrive at 22:00 it's 25-30 min direct.
