Istanbul Airport (IST) is 45 km north-west of the city centre on the European side — 50-90 minutes by road depending on Istanbul's notorious traffic. The M11 metro line opened in 2023 connecting IST to Kağıthane in 30 min for ~50 TRY, with onward transfers to centre districts. Pre-booked transfers are heavily used here because of the distance + traffic unpredictability + scale of the airport (the world's largest by area). Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) is the Asian-side alternative — 50 km south-east of centre, 60-90 min.

IST or Sabiha Gökçen (SAW)?+
IST (new airport, opened 2018) is on the European side — most international carriers (Turkish Airlines, most European + Middle East airlines). SAW is on the Asian side — mostly low-cost (Pegasus, AnadoluJet, some Turkish Airlines domestic). The two are 75-100 km apart with no direct rail — 100-140 min by car between them. Confirm which airport at booking.
Why so much taxi-scam talk about Istanbul?+
Istanbul taxis have a history of: claiming meters are "broken" and demanding fixed (inflated) fares, taking circuitous routes, exchanging passengers' larger banknotes with smaller ones during payment. Reforms have improved official ranks, but unofficial taxi solicitors at IST arrivals still appear. Pre-booked transfer with fixed price (Welcome Pickups, Kiwitaxi) eliminates this entirely.
IST to Sultanahmet transfer time?+
Sultanahmet is the historic centre (Old City) — 45 km from IST. In light traffic: 50-60 min. In Istanbul peak (07:00-10:00, 17:00-20:00): 80-120 min. M11 metro to centre — does it work?+
The M11 metro (opened Jan 2023) runs from IST direct to Kağıthane (30 min, ~50 TRY ≈ €1.30) every 8-10 min. From Kağıthane you transfer to M7 for Mecidiyeköy or other lines for further centre. Total to Sultanahmet: 90-110 min with transfers. Cheap but slow + multiple changes with luggage. Useful for budget solo travellers; not ideal for families with bags.
