Gautrain wins on speed + reliability if your destination is Sandton or Rosebank — R200 direct, 15 minutes, no traffic. Uber: R150-350, 30-60 min in traffic. Take Gautrain if your hotel is walking distance from Sandton or Rosebank stations. Uber if going to CBD, Melville, or northern suburbs — Gautrain doesn't reach those.
Is Uber safe at JNB?+
Yes if used correctly. Meet the driver at the marked ride-hail pickup zone (outside domestic arrivals), confirm the driver + plate match the app, and don't accept rides from drivers who approach you inside the terminal. Both Uber + Bolt are widely used in Johannesburg. Do NOT use unmarked "airport shuttle" services that approach you at baggage claim.

Alternative: fly JNB→Skukuza (SZK) or Kruger Mpumalanga International (MQP) — 50 min flight + 30-60 min drive to lodge, R2,500-4,500 flight one-way.
