Tokyo Airport Transfer Guide

🇯🇵 Narita International (NRT) — Updated 2026

Tokyo has two airports — Narita (NRT, 66 km east, most international long-haul) and Haneda (HND, 15 km south, closer + faster for Asia + transpacific). Narita Express train (¥3,070) and Keisei Skyliner (¥2,580) both reach central Tokyo in 41-60 min — they are excellent for solo travellers. Haneda is closer with cheaper transport (Tokyo Monorail ¥500, 13 min to Hamamatsucho). Taxis are extraordinarily expensive — Narita to central Tokyo runs ¥25,000-30,000 (USD 165-200). Pre-booked transfers are typically ¥10,000-18,000 — a substantial saving versus taxi but reasonable for groups of 3-4 with luggage.

FAQ

Narita Express or pre-booked transfer?+

N'EX is ¥3,070 (~$20), 53-80 min direct NRT→Tokyo/Shinjuku/Shibuya, every 30 min. Pre-booked transfer is ¥10,000-18,000, 70-110 min, door-to-door. For solo + light luggage + hotel near JR station: N'EX wins dramatically on price. For 3-4 people, heavy luggage, late arrival, or hotel far from JR: transfer is competitive total cost (¥4,500/person split 4 ways).

Narita or Haneda for Tokyo arrivals?+

Haneda (HND): 15 km south, 13-40 min to central Tokyo, ¥500-15,000 transport, mainly Asia + transpacific + JAL/ANA long-haul. Narita (NRT): 66 km east, 41-110 min to central Tokyo, ¥2,580-18,000 transport, all other international. HND is dramatically more convenient — if your origin airport flies to HND, choose it. NRT is fine but the extra 30-50 min adds up.

Why are Tokyo taxis so expensive?+

Tokyo taxis use a meter base of ¥500 + ¥100/255m, plus 20% night surcharge 22:00-05:00, plus expressway tolls. A Narita→Shinjuku taxi runs ¥25,000-30,000 (USD 165-200) typically. This is 5-10x the equivalent NYC/London taxi. Pre-booked transfers at ¥10,000-18,000 are still expensive but a major saving versus taxi.

Late-night Narita arrivals — what runs?+

Last N'EX: 22:00. Last Skyliner: 22:45. Last limousine bus: variable, mostly stops 22:00-23:00. Last regular train: 23:00. After 22:00, options are: airport hotel (¥10,000-15,000), pre-booked transfer (¥12,000-22,000 with night surcharge), or taxi (¥30,000+). Pre-book if your flight lands after 21:00 to avoid scrambling.
