Almost all Venice hotels facing canals have a private water gate — an entrance from the canal where boats can dock. Arrival is at a small dock or ledge with 1-2 steps up to hotel lobby. For hotels not on major canals, water taxi drops at the closest public dock + porter delivers luggage.
Piazzale Roma arrival with luggage — how bad?+
Depends on hotel location. Hotels within 200m of Piazzale Roma or a Grand Canal vaporetto stop: manageable. Hotels deeper in Venice (Cannaregio, Castello, Dorsoduro): expect 15-25 minutes of pushing/dragging luggage across footbridges (each with 8-20 stairs). Wheelie bags larger than 55 cm are a real struggle. If your hotel is not water-taxi accessible, consider alternative accommodation on the mainland (Mestre) or splurge on a bag-porter service.
