FAQ
Where is the Airport Express station inside HKIA?+
The Airport Express station is integrated into the airport — directly accessible from the Arrivals Hall in Terminal 1 (escalators down from the main hall). Follow turquoise "Airport Express / 機場快綫" signs. Total walk from gate to platform is typically 5–15 minutes depending on which gate you arrive at. Trains depart every 10 minutes from 05:54 to 00:48 daily.
How does the free hotel shuttle bus work?+
Hong Kong Airport Express runs free shuttle buses (H1, H2, K1, K2, K3, K4) from Hong Kong Station (Central) and Kowloon Station to major hotels around Central, Admiralty, Wan Chai, Tsim Sha Tsui, Jordan, and Mong Kok. Show your same-day Airport Express ticket or Octopus card with an Airport Express deduction to board free. Buses run every 12–24 minutes from 06:12 to 23:12. This is the biggest hidden value of the AEL — no taxi fare to your hotel.
Can I check in my bags before going to the airport?+
Yes — In-Town Check-In is available at Hong Kong Station and Kowloon Station for passengers travelling on participating airlines (Cathay Pacific, Hong Kong Airlines, Greater Bay, ANA, JAL, Qatar, Emirates, Singapore Airlines, United, and more). Available from 24 hours to 90 minutes before your flight. You drop your bags, get your boarding pass, then ride the AEL bag-free. Free with any Airport Express ticket. This is unique to Hong Kong and a massive convenience.
Is the Airport Express worth it vs the regular MTR?+
For a single traveller with luggage going to Central or Kowloon: yes. HK$115 vs HK$25 for the MTR — but you save 25 minutes, get free hotel shuttle, and free in-town check-in on the return. For a budget trip with light luggage and time: the MTR Tung Chung Line is fine. Tip: book the AEL return ticket (HK$205) and you get a discount, but only if you actually use it within 30 days. For groups of 3+, take a taxi — fares split between people often come out cheaper than AEL × 3.
Can I use Octopus card on the Airport Express?+
Yes — Octopus card works on the Airport Express. Tap in at the gate, tap out at your destination. Fares are the same as paper tickets (HK$115 single to Central). If you do not have Octopus yet, buy one at the airport from the vending machine or counter — HK$50 deposit refundable, plus stored value. Octopus also gets you free hotel shuttle access. Apple Pay, Google Pay, and most foreign credit cards also work at the ticket vending machines but not at the gates.
How do I get to Shenzhen or Guangzhou from HKIA?+
Three good options: (1) Airport Express to Kowloon → walk 10 min to West Kowloon high-speed rail station → Vibrant Express to Futian Shenzhen (14 min, HK$78) or Guangzhou South (47 min, HK$215). Total HKIA → Shenzhen CBD: ~1.5 hours. (2) Direct cross-border coach from HKIA arrivals — Eternal East and Trans-Island lines run to Shenzhen Bay, Lo Wu, and Guangzhou (HK$200–300, 2–3 hours). (3) HZMB Bridge bus (B5 + cross-border) to Zhuhai/Macau — HK$65, 50 min. The Vibrant Express via Kowloon is the fastest premium option.
