Most Maldivian resorts can only be reached by seaplane — Twin Otter aircraft that land on the lagoon next to your resort. The two operators are Trans Maldivian Airways (TMA)and Manta Air. You don't book direct — seaplane transfers are sold as an add-on through your resort, typically $400–800 round-trip per person. Flights are daylight-only (last departure from MLE around 16:30) — late evening arrivals require an overnight in Hulhumalé before transferring out the next morning.

FAQ

Do I book the seaplane myself or through my resort?+

Through your resort. Trans Maldivian Airways (TMA) and Manta Air do not sell tickets to consumers directly — they only operate transfers booked via partner resorts. When you book a Maldives resort (via Trip.com, Booking.com, the resort directly, or a travel agent), you select "seaplane transfer" as an add-on, typically $400–800 per person round-trip. The resort coordinates the schedule. You will be met at Velana Airport (MLE) by your resort representative and escorted to the seaplane terminal.

Where is the seaplane terminal at Velana Airport (MLE)?+

There are two separate seaplane terminals at Velana. The TMA terminal is the largest (used by 50+ resorts) and the Manta Air terminal serves their partner resorts. Both are connected to the MLE international terminal by a 2-minute shuttle bus. After clearing immigration and customs at MLE, your resort representative will meet you in the Arrivals Hall and walk you to the correct seaplane lounge. Most resorts include lounge access (snacks, WiFi, soft drinks) while you wait.

Why is it so expensive?+

Three reasons. (1) Each Twin Otter seats only 16–22 passengers vs 180+ on a commercial jet — small fleet means high per-seat cost. (2) Operating costs are high — turbine fuel + maintenance + harsh saltwater corrosion + remote logistics. (3) Demand: 1.7 million tourists per year, mostly to resorts requiring seaplanes. The economics are tight at sub-$300, and at $600+ the operators still run thin margins. Some luxury resorts (Soneva Jani, Niyama) include unlimited domestic transfers in the rate.

What is the daylight-only restriction?+

Seaplanes can only land on water visually — no instrument landings, no night operations. Last seaplane departures from MLE are typically 16:00–16:30, last arrivals into MLE around 17:30. If your international flight lands after ~14:00, plan to overnight on Hulhumalé Island near MLE — most resorts will recommend specific overnight properties and rebook you on the first morning flight. The Hulhumalé Sun Siyam Olhuveli or similar hotels cost $150–250 for a one-night stopover.

What's the luggage limit?+

Standard TMA + Manta Air allowance is 20 kg checked + 5 kg carry-on per person. Excess is charged at $5–8 per kg. The Twin Otter is small — there is genuinely limited storage. If you are bringing dive gear, scuba kit, or large camera equipment, pre-arrange with your resort (some can ship excess separately by speedboat). Soft duffel bags pack better than hard suitcases. Solo carry-ons are usually waved through unweighed.

Which resorts use seaplanes vs speedboats?+

Roughly: resorts within 30 km of Malé (North Malé Atoll) use speedboats (20–45 min). Resorts 30–150 km away use seaplanes (15–45 min). Resorts 150+ km away (Addu Atoll, Laamu, Fuvahmulah) require domestic flight + speedboat. When booking, check the resort's transfer time and method — a remote 60-min seaplane ride is great for scenery but bad for budget. Six Senses Laamu, Soneva Jani, Patina, Joali, Anantara Kihavah, COMO Maalifushi — all seaplane access.

Is it worth flying business class for the seaplane experience?+

The seaplane has no class distinction — everyone sits in the same 16–22-seat cabin. The "luxury" comes from the resort lounges before/after the flight (Soneva's lounge is iconic, with bare-feet welcome and signature treats). The scenic value is identical regardless of who you booked through — flying over turquoise water and white-sand reefs is the spectacle, and it's the same view from every seat. Pick a window seat by asking the staff during boarding.
