Athens: Where Every Meal Tells a Story

Athens is one of those rare cities where the food is as layered and fascinating as the history beneath your feet. From hole-in-the-wall souvlaki stands in Monastiraki to elegant tavernas draped in bougainvillea in Koukaki, eating your way through the Greek capital is an adventure that rivals visiting the Acropolis itself. Whether you're a street food fanatic or a sit-down supper devotee, Athens will feed you well and leave you planning your return before the meal is even over.

Overview

Athens is a city of roughly 3.5 million people, ancient monuments, and an emerging food scene that has quietly become one of Europe's most exciting. Greek cuisine has long been celebrated for its simplicity โ€” fresh olive oil, grilled meats, tangy feta, ripe tomatoes โ€” but modern Athenian chefs are pushing those traditions into bold new territory. The city's food culture is deeply social. Meals are long, portions are generous, and locals eat late, with dinner rarely starting before 9 PM. Visiting in spring or autumn means comfortable temperatures and fewer crowds, making it ideal for exploring neighbourhood food markets and outdoor taverna terraces.

Essential Information

  • Currency: Euro (โ‚ฌ). Budget roughly $15โ€“$25 USD per person for a solid taverna meal with wine; street food runs $3โ€“$7 per item.
  • Language: Greek, though English is widely spoken in restaurants across tourist areas.
  • Tipping: Not mandatory, but rounding up or leaving 10% is appreciated.
  • Best neighbourhoods for food: Monastiraki and Psiri for street food; Koukaki and Pangrati for neighbourhood gems; Kolonaki for upscale dining.
  • Water: Tap water is safe to drink in Athens.
  • Dining hours: Lunch runs from 1โ€“4 PM; dinner kicks off around 9 PM and can stretch past midnight.

Where to Eat

Start your culinary journey in Monastiraki Square, the beating heart of Athens street food. Thanasis and Bairaktaris, two legendary souvlaki institutions sitting almost opposite each other on Mitropoleos Street, have been serving perfectly charred lamb and pork skewers for decades. A souvlaki pita with tzatziki, onions, and tomatoes will set you back around $3โ€“$4 and is best eaten standing on the pavement watching the city swirl around you.

For a proper sit-down taverna experience, head to Koukaki, the low-key residential neighbourhood just south of the Acropolis. Locals fill tables here nightly. Look for daily specials written on a chalkboard โ€” slow-cooked lamb kleftiko, gigantes plaki (giant baked beans in tomato sauce), or fresh grilled octopus. Meals here typically cost $18โ€“$30 per person including local wine or a cold Fix beer.

Don't leave Athens without visiting the Varvakios Central Market on Athinas Street. Open since 1886, this covered meat and fish market is raw, loud, and completely authentic. Surrounding it are cheap lunch counters serving patsas (tripe soup) and grilled offal โ€” not for everyone, but deeply Athenian. Nearby spice and olive stalls make excellent spots to pick up edible souvenirs.

For something more contemporary, the neighbourhood of Pangrati has quietly become a hub for creative restaurants. Mavro Provato and Spondi (the latter holding two Michelin stars) represent opposite ends of the spectrum โ€” one a rustic neighbourhood spot beloved for its grilled meats and natural wines, the other a formal fine-dining experience set in a romantic courtyard. Both are worth booking in advance.

  • Must-try dishes: Spanakopita (spinach and feta pie), taramasalata, loukoumades (honey-drenched doughnuts), fresh grilled fish at Piraeus harbour.
  • Best coffee: Athens takes its cafรฉ culture seriously. Freddo espresso โ€” a double shot shaken over ice โ€” is the local obsession, typically $3โ€“$4 at any neighbourhood cafรฉ.

Getting There

Athens is served by Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos (ATH), located about 17 miles east of the city centre. Direct flights connect Athens with most major European hubs, and transatlantic travellers typically connect through London, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, or Dubai. From the US, expect to pay $600โ€“$1,100 for a round-trip fare depending on season and how far in advance you book. The Metro Line 3 runs directly from the airport to Syntagma Square in the city centre in about 40 minutes for โ‚ฌ10 (roughly $11). Taxis to the centre cost around $40โ€“$50 USD.

Athens offers strong value for money compared to many Western European capitals, with a wide range of accommodation to suit every budget.

  • Budget ($50โ€“$90/night): Hostel boutiques and guesthouses in Monastiraki and Omonia are well-located and affordable. City Circus Athens is a popular choice with a rooftop terrace and social atmosphere.
  • Mid-range ($100โ€“$200/night): Boutique hotels in Koukaki and Psiri offer stylish rooms and Acropolis views without the premium price tag. The Herodion Hotel and Athens Was are consistently well-reviewed.
  • Luxury ($250+/night): The Hotel Grande Bretagne on Syntagma Square is Athens at its most glamorous โ€” historic, impeccably
