Bali Travel Guide: March 2026 — What to Know Before You Go

March 25, 2026AirConnect Editors

Why Visit Bali in March 2026

If you're searching for the sweet spot between lush tropical beauty and manageable crowds, visiting Bali in March delivers something genuinely special. March sits at the tail end of Bali's wet season, meaning the island is draped in impossibly vivid green — rice terraces glow, waterfalls thunder at full force, and the landscape feels alive in a way that the dry-season photographs simply don't capture. Rainfall typically comes in short, sharp afternoon bursts rather than all-day downpours, leaving mornings reliably clear and perfect for temple visits, surf sessions, and sunrise hikes up Mount Batur. Temperatures hover comfortably between 26°C and 31°C, making this one of the most pleasant times to explore the island on foot or by scooter.

March 2026 also brings one of Bali's most extraordinary cultural events: Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence, which falls on 19 March 2026. The night before, the island erupts with the Ogoh-Ogoh parade — enormous, elaborately crafted demon effigies are carried through the streets in a breathtaking procession of fire, music, and ceremony. Then, for 24 hours, Bali falls completely silent. No flights, no traffic, no lights. It is one of the most profound travel experiences in Southeast Asia. Plan to be on the island for both nights to witness the full contrast, and book accommodation well in advance as this period fills up fast.

Getting There

Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS)

Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport (IATA: DPS), located just south of Kuta, is the main gateway to the island and one of the busiest airports in Indonesia. It handles both domestic and international arrivals efficiently, with a modern international terminal that includes currency exchange, SIM card vendors, and taxi booking counters immediately after customs.

For flights to Bali in March 2026, expect to find competitive fares from major hubs. Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific offer excellent connections via Singapore and Hong Kong respectively, with return economy fares from Europe typically ranging from £650–£950 depending on booking timing. From Australia, Qantas and Jetstar operate direct routes from Sydney and Melbourne, with returns often available from AUD $400–$700. From the US West Coast, Singapore Airlines via Singapore remains the most seamless routing, with fares from around USD $800–$1,200 return.

Booking tip: Secure your flights at least three to four months ahead if you're travelling around Nyepi. Prices spike significantly in the two weeks surrounding the holiday, and availability on neighbouring dates can vanish quickly. Setting fare alerts on Google Flights or Skyscanner from October 2025 onwards is strongly recommended.

Top Neighbourhoods

Ubud — The Cultural Heart

Nestled among terraced rice paddies and jungle, Ubud is the spiritual and artistic soul of Bali. This is the place to wake up to gamelan music drifting over misty valleys, explore the Agung Rai Museum of Art (ARMA), and stumble upon impromptu temple ceremonies at every corner. The town centre buzzes with excellent restaurants, wellness retreats, and craft markets, while just minutes away you'll find utter serenity. Ubud is ideal for travellers who want culture, calm, and cuisine in equal measure.

Seminyak — Style and Sunsets

Seminyak is Bali's most sophisticated beach neighbourhood — a seamless blend of boutique hotels, designer shops, acclaimed restaurants, and long, uncrowded stretches of sand. The famous Potato Head Beach Club sits here, as does La Plancha, where colourful bean bags line the beach for legendary sunset gatherings. It's upscale without being stuffy, and March's dramatic skies make the sunsets here genuinely unforgettable.

Canggu — The Creative Village

Canggu has evolved from a surfer's hideout into a vibrant neighbourhood full of independent cafés, organic eateries, yoga studios, and creative co-working spaces. Echo Beach draws consistent waves and an energetic surf crowd, while the surrounding lanes are packed with some of Bali's best casual dining. It strikes the perfect balance between laid-back and lively — great for younger travellers and digital nomads.

Must-Do Experiences

1. Sunrise Hike on Mount Batur

Rise at 2am for a guided hike up the active volcano Mount Batur in Kintamani. Reaching the 1,717-metre summit just as the sun breaks over Lake Batur and the surrounding caldera is a moment that stays with you for life. March's post-rain clarity often makes for exceptional visibility.

2. Tirta Empul Temple

Near Ubud, Pura Tirta Empul is one of Bali's holiest sites — a sacred spring temple where Balinese Hindus perform melukat, a purification ritual in the holy waters. Visiting in March, you may witness heightened ceremony activity in the lead-up to Nyepi. Dress respectfully and arrive early.

3. Tegallalang Rice Terraces

The UNESCO-celebrated Tegallalang Rice Terraces, just north of Ubud, are at their most verdant and photogenic in March. Walk the narrow paths between paddies, chat with local farmers, and enjoy a coffee from one of the small warungs perched on the ridge with sweeping views across the valley.

4. Surf Lessons at Kuta Beach

Kuta Beach remains the best place in Bali for beginner surfers, with gentle rolling waves, affordable lessons from experienced local instructors, and a buzzing beachfront atmosphere. March swells are manageable, making it the ideal month to stand up for the first time.

5. The Ogoh-Ogoh Parade (18 March 2026)

Don't miss the Ogoh-Ogoh processions on the eve of Nyepi. Head to Denpasar or the main crossroads in Ubud for the most spectacular displays. The papier-mâché giants — some towering over four metres — are paraded through firelit streets before being symbolically burned to cleanse the island of evil spirits. It is, without exaggeration, one of the great spectacles of Asian travel.

Best Restaurants & Food

Locavore — Ubud

Consistently rated among Asia's best restaurants, Locavore on Jalan Dewi Sita in Ubud offers a stunning tasting menu built entirely around Indonesian ingredients, reimagined with world-class technique. Book your table at least six weeks in advance — it fills up fast year-round.
