Complete Travel Guide: Colombo, Sri Lanka

March 22, 2026AirConnect Editors

Introduction

Colombo is one of South Asia's most underrated city destinations β€” a sprawling, charismatic port city where colonial architecture meets rooftop cocktail bars, and street food carts line the same boulevards as luxury hotels. Whether you're using it as a gateway to the rest of Sri Lanka or giving it the dedicated time it deserves, Colombo rewards curious travellers who look beyond the surface.

Overview

Sri Lanka's commercial capital sits on the southwest coast of the island and is home to around 750,000 people in the city proper, with the greater metro area swelling to over 5 million. It's a city of contrasts β€” Dutch and British colonial history bleeds into a thriving modern dining scene, Buddhist temples stand beside mosques and Hindu kovils, and the Indian Ocean frames it all from the west.

Why visit? Because Colombo is genuinely exciting right now. A wave of boutique hotels, independent restaurants, and creative businesses has transformed neighbourhoods like Colombo 7 (Cinnamon Gardens) and the Galle Face waterfront strip into destinations in their own right. It's also extremely affordable by international standards, making it easy to eat, drink, and explore well without breaking the budget.

Essential Information

  • Currency: Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). As of 2025, 1 USD is approximately 300–310 LKR. ATMs are widely available, and card payments are accepted in most hotels and restaurants.
  • Language: Sinhala and Tamil are official languages, but English is widely spoken in tourist areas, hotels, and most restaurants.
  • Visa: Most nationalities require an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before arrival. It costs around $20 USD and can be obtained online within 24 hours at eta.gov.lk.
  • Climate: Colombo is warm year-round, averaging 28–32Β°C (82–90Β°F). The southwest monsoon runs May through September, bringing heavier rainfall, but this rarely disrupts travel significantly.
  • Safety: Colombo is considered safe for tourists. Standard city precautions apply β€” watch your belongings in crowded markets and use registered taxis after dark.

Practical Tips

Getting around Colombo is easy once you know the system. The city is divided into numbered postal districts, and locals refer to neighbourhoods by their number β€” Colombo 1 is the Fort district (the historic and business hub), Colombo 3 is Kollupitiya (great for cafΓ©s and shopping), and Colombo 7 is the leafy, upmarket Cinnamon Gardens area where you'll find the National Museum and Independence Square.

  • Transport: Ride-hailing apps PickMe and Uber both operate in Colombo and are far more reliable and transparent than negotiating with tuk-tuk drivers. A typical city ride costs $1–3 USD. Tuk-tuks are fine for short hops but always agree on a price first.
  • Food: Don't skip the local rice and curry β€” a generous lunch plate at a local eatery costs as little as $1.50–2.50 USD. For something more upscale, the restaurant scene around Colombo 3 and Colombo 7 is excellent and still very affordable by Western standards.
  • Data: Buy a local SIM card at the airport (Dialog or Mobitel are the top providers). A data-heavy tourist package costs around $5–8 USD and will cover your whole trip.
  • Dress code: When visiting temples or religious sites, carry a sarong or light scarf to cover your shoulders and knees. This applies to both men and women.

Getting There

Colombo is served by Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), located in Katunayake, approximately 35 kilometres north of the city centre. The journey into Colombo takes 45–60 minutes by car, or around 90 minutes if you opt for the airport express train, which is the most affordable option at under $1 USD.

Direct flights to CMB operate from major hubs including Dubai (Emirates, flydubai), Doha (Qatar Airways), Singapore (SriLankan Airlines, Singapore Airlines), London Heathrow (SriLankan Airlines), and Frankfurt. Travellers from North America will typically connect via the Gulf or Singapore. Expect flight times of roughly 10–11 hours from London, 5 hours from Dubai, and 3.5 hours from Singapore.

Accommodation Options

Colombo has accommodation to suit every travel style, from budget guesthouses to some of the finest hotels in South Asia.

  • Budget ($20–55/night): The Colombo City Hostel and Havelock Place Bungalow offer clean, well-located rooms with genuine character. The Wellawatta and Bambalapitiya neighbourhoods are good hunting grounds for affordable guesthouses.
  • Mid-range ($80–160/night): The Galle Face Hotel is a landmark colonial property right on the ocean β€” rates are reasonable for what you get and the atmosphere is unmatched. Casa Colombo in Kollupitiya is a stunning boutique option with beautifully designed rooms.
  • Luxury ($200+/night): The Shangri-La Colombo and Cinnamon Grand consistently rank among the best hotels in South Asia, offering world-class service, multiple restaurants, and exceptional ocean or city views. The recently opened Marriott Colombo is another strong contender in this category.
