Colombo, Sri Lanka: The Perfect Day Trip Destination

Colombo is one of South Asia's most underrated city escapes β€” a buzzing, colourful capital where colonial architecture meets street food markets, boutique galleries, and ocean sunsets that will stop you mid-sentence. Whether you're island-hopping through Sri Lanka or flying in for a quick stopover, a day trip to Colombo rewards curious travellers with more layers than you'd expect from a single afternoon.

Overview

Sri Lanka's commercial capital sits on the southwest coast of the island, roughly 30 kilometres north of the international airport at Katunayake. Home to around 750,000 people in the city proper (and several million in the greater metro area), Colombo is a fast-moving, culturally rich destination that blends Sinhalese, Tamil, Malay, Dutch, and British influences into something entirely its own.

Why visit? Because Colombo punches well above its weight for a day trip. In a single day you can wander the shaded streets of the Pettah bazaar district, sip a flat white in the leafy neighbourhood of Colombo 3 (Kollupitiya), stroll the Galle Face Green seafront promenade at dusk, and eat some of the best kottu roti you'll find anywhere on the planet. It's chaotic, charming, and completely addictive.

Essential Information

  • Currency: Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). As of 2024, roughly 300 LKR to $1 USD. ATMs are widely available in central Colombo.
  • Language: Sinhala and Tamil are official languages; English is widely spoken in hotels, restaurants, and tourist areas.
  • Time Zone: Sri Lanka Standard Time (UTC+5:30) β€” no daylight saving changes.
  • Visa: Most nationalities require an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before arrival, available online at eta.gov.lk. Cost is approximately $20 USD.
  • Best Time to Visit: December to March offers the driest weather on the west coast. April through June can be humid but still manageable for city sightseeing.
  • Safety: Colombo is generally safe for travellers. Standard city precautions apply β€” watch your belongings in crowded markets like Pettah.

Practical Tips

  • Get a local SIM: Pick up a Dialog or Mobitel SIM card at the airport for around $3–5 USD. Data is cheap and coverage is strong across the city.
  • Use PickMe: Sri Lanka's answer to Uber is the PickMe app. It's reliable, metered, and far safer than hailing a tuk-tuk without negotiating a price first. A ride across central Colombo typically costs $1.50–4 USD.
  • Dress modestly near temples: The Gangaramaya Temple and Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque (the famous red-and-white "Zebra Mosque" in Pettah) welcome visitors but expect covered shoulders and knees.
  • Eat where locals eat: Skip the hotel buffets and try a rice-and-curry lunch at a local kade (small canteen) in Fort or Pettah β€” you'll pay under $2 USD for a full meal.
  • Carry small change: Many street vendors and tuk-tuk drivers struggle to break large notes. Keep plenty of 100 and 200 LKR notes handy.
  • Start early: Colombo heats up significantly by midday. Begin your sightseeing by 8am, take a long lunch break indoors, and resume exploring after 4pm when the light is golden and the Galle Face Green comes alive.

Getting There

Colombo is served by Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), located in Katunayake. It is one of the best-connected airports in South Asia, with direct flights from Dubai, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, London, Mumbai, Bangkok, and Doha, among many others. Emirates, SriLankan Airlines, Qatar Airways, and Singapore Airlines all operate regular routes into CMB.

From Europe and North America, expect a journey of 10–16 hours with one connection. Return flights from the UK typically start around $550–750 USD, while travellers from the US East Coast can find fares from approximately $900–1,200 USD return.

From the airport to central Colombo, an airport taxi costs roughly $12–18 USD (book through the official counter inside arrivals). The Colombo Commuter Rail also connects Katunayake to Fort Station in around 40–50 minutes for under $1 USD β€” a great budget option if you're travelling light.

Accommodation Options

Budget ($15–40 USD/night): The Colombo City Hostel and Colombo Courtyard are solid choices near Fort and Pettah. Clean, central, and sociable β€” ideal if you're keeping costs tight.

Mid-Range ($60–130 USD/night): The Granbell Hotel in Colombo 3 and The Tintagel Colombo (a beautifully restored colonial mansion in Colombo 7) offer excellent value, great locations, and genuine local character.

Luxury ($180 USD+/night): The Galle Face Hotel is Colombo's grande dame β€” a sprawling oceanfront colonial hotel that has hosted royalty and rock stars since 1864. The Shangri-La Colombo delivers five-star modernity with panoramic Indian Ocean views from its upper floors.
